LSU Law Review Centennial Issue to Focus on Genomics Symposium
July 14, 2006The editors and associates of the Louisiana Law Review have produced a special issue of Volume 66 to celebrate its 100th year of academic excellence in 2006. The Centennial issue is a compilation of speeches from a recent conference titled The Genomics Revolution? Science, Law and Policy. Facilitated by Professor Michael J. Malinowski and sponsored jointly by the Paul M. Hebert Law Center and Pennington Biomedical Research Center, the conference covered groundbreaking topics and was attended by some of the most renowned scientists and professors of health studies in the United States and Canada.

Law Professors Receive Promotion and Tenure
July 14, 2006Andrea Carroll recently received the faculty’s recommendation for promotion to Associate Professor of Law. Catherine Rogers received the faculty’s recommendation for tenure and promotion to the rank of Professor of Law. Associate Professor Darlene Goring was recommended by the faculty for tenure. The LSU Board of Supervisors approved the recommendations at the April meeting.

Law Center Hosts Hemispheric Trade Conference
July 14, 2006The LSU Law Center hosted an April conference focusing on the differences between common law and civil law approaches to commercial law and the impact on hemispheric trade. The conference, titled Challenges to Hemispheric Trade Posed by the Common/Civil Law Divide, was held at the Cook Conference Center and featured numerous speakers from throughout the United States and Latin America. He addressed the negligent homicide charges brought against New Orleans nursing home operators following the hurricanes. PROFESSOR STUART GREEN was recently appointed to the editorial board of the journal, Criminal Law and Philosophy (Springer Publisher). He was an invited speaker at the University of Michigan Law School, Wayne State University Law School in Detroit, and Notre Dame Law School. LSU Law Center Celebrates 100-Year Anniversary with Dedication of Plaza and Memorial to Senator Russell B. Long
July 14, 2006The LSU Law Center kicked off its centennial celebration on Friday, March 10 with the dedication of the Centennial Plaza and a memorial to Senator Russell B. Long. U.S. Senator Russell B. Long, distinguished 1942 graduate of the LSU Law Center and seven term senator from Louisiana, was honored with the dedication of a bronze sculpture and memorial fountain in his name. Colleagues, family and friends of the Senator provided resources for the memorial, which is the centerpiece of the Law Center’s Centennial Plaza, a beautiful outdoor space designed as a gathering place for students, faculty and staff. LSU Law Center Awards Summer Fellowships for Public Service
July 14, 2006LSU Law Center Chancellor John Costonis announced the award of six student fellowships as part of the Law Center’s public service initiatives. The Public Interest Law Society (PILS) fellowships were awarded to students following a competitive application process that concluded this spring. The PILS fellows will work this summer in a wide variety of organizations in Louisiana and the nation. The fellowships provide stipends to support students while they pursue interests in serving the public sector. LSU Law Students Selected for 2006 Equal Justice Works Summer Corps Program
July 14, 2006Two LSU Law students will spend this summer interning with nonprofit public interest law organizations as a part of Equal Justice Works’ Summer Corps Program. Laura Davenport and Adia Moore will each receive a $1,000 education award voucher through this national AmeriCorps-funded program. The two students were among 608 applicants for 315 participant-slots nationwide. The 2006 Summer Corps participants are first-year and second-year law students from 113 law schools. They will each serve at least 300 hours in public interest internships, providing critically needed legal assistance to low-income and underserved communities in 42 states. 249 Receive Degrees at LSU Law Center's 2006 Commencement Exercises
July 14, 2006Thomas C. Galligan, Jr., former LSU Law Center professor and current dean and professor at the University of Tennessee College of Law, delivered the commencement address at the LSU Law Center graduation ceremony held today. The Law Center conferred degrees upon 249 students. Chancellor John J. Costonis was joined by LSU System President William L. Jenkins and Charles S. Weems, 1969 LSU Law Center graduate and member of the LSU Board of Supervisors, as degrees were conferred. Graduates come from 21 states and six foreign countries. Three LSU Law Teams Emerge as National Champions
July 14, 2006Just as our men’s and women’s basketball teams have been successful on the national scene, it’s been a championship season for the LSU Law Center, as well! In the court we play in, three student teams emerged from national moot court tournaments as national champions. Taking first place honors in diverse competitions throughout the year were: the International Criminal Court Team; the National Environmental Law Team; and the American Bar Association Law Student Tax Challenge Team. Pat Juneau Named 2006 LSU Law Center Distinguished Alumnus of the Year
July 14, 2006Patrick A. Juneau, Jr. of Lafayette has been named the LSU Law Center 2006 Distinguished Alumnus of the Year. Chancellor John J. Costonis announced the selection of Juneau at the spring 2006 meeting of the LSU Law Center Board of Trustees. Juneau will be honored at the Distinguished Alumnus Banquet to be held the evening of Wednesday, November 1, 2006. The banquet will be held at the City Club at River Ranch in Juneau’s hometown of Lafayette, LA. Pat Juneau obtained his Juris Doctor degree from the LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center in 1965. The Work of the Pugh Institute
July 12, 2006The George W. and Jean H. Pugh Institute for Justice provides support for research and educational activities that promote justice for individuals in the administration of the criminal and civil justice systems in Louisiana and elsewhere. The Institute achieves its mission in partnership with the Louisiana Law Review, sponsoring symposia that foster publication and electronic distribution of related research. The Pugh Institute was founded in 1998. To date, the Institute has raised approximately $175,000 in contributions from former students of Professor Pugh. LSU Law Center to Host Environmental Roundtable on Oyster Lease Case
July 12, 2006The LSU Law Center will convene a panel of legal experts on Thursday, November 18 to discuss the recent state Supreme Court ruling regarding oyster leases and public takings. The Environmental Roundtable will focus on Avenal v State of Louisiana in which a $1.3 billion judgment for south Louisiana oystermen was thrown out by a unanimous state Supreme Court.
