LSU Law students, professors attend Institute for Energy Law Oil & Gas Conference in Houston

LSU Law School was prominently represented at the Institute for Energy Law Annual Oil & Gas Conference in Houston on Feb. 20 and 21. LSU Law students Taylor B. Ashworth, Destiny Manning and Shawn Waldron attended, as did LSU Professor Keith Hall and Professor Emeritus Patrick H. Martin. Numerous lawyers who are graduates of LSU Law School also attended. The conference attracted more than 400 participants from around the country, with many of the participants being lawyers who have significant experience in the oil and gas industry. Second-year LSU Law student Hailey Manint is passionate about helping those around her. She’s an active member of the Public Interest Law Society, serving as the Career and Fellowship Board Chair, and she likes to spend her free time doing pro bono work. She’s serving as a criminal law student tutor this year, she’ll be participating in the Juvenile Defense Clinic next semester, and after graduation she’s hoping to use her law degree to pursue a career in public interest law. “My dream job would be to work for the ACLU doing civil impact litigation,” says the Baton Rouge native…

Cold winters drove Erin Wilder-Doomes from the Midwest after she graduated from the University of Iowa with a B.S. in psychology in 1995, and the warmth of those whom she met as a student at LSU Law has kept her in Baton Rouge ever since. A native of Topeka, Kansas, Wilder-Doomes decided to head to Iowa for college after receiving a full scholarship offer. LSU Law chapter of American Constitution Society named ‘Student Chapter of the Week’

The American Constitution Society has named the LSU Law chapter its “Student Chapter of the Week.” In honoring the LSU Law chapter, ACS cites its impressive lineup of events thus far this year. Among them, the LSU Law chapter has hosted a guest speaker from local non-profit Voice of the Experience (VOTE), which advocates for the rights of formerly incarcerated people. To mark Constitution Day, it taught a lesson on the First Amendment and separation of powers to high school students at LSU University Laboratory School. LSU Law hosted its 2019-2020 Scholarship Reception honoring benefactors and student recipients on Tuesday, Feb. 11, at The Club at Union Square. The annual event connects scholarship donors with the student recipients of those scholarships. Students have the opportunity to learn more about the donors and what motivated their generosity. Donors are delighted to meet “their” students and learn about the unique qualifications, ambitions, accomplishments and challenges that led them to LSU Law.

Applications being accepted for Fall 2020 field placements and clinics

Applications are being accepted from LSU Law students who are interested in participating in Fall 2020 field placements and clinics. The deadline to apply is midnight on Wednesday, March 11. Clinics being offered this fall include Civil Mediation Clinic, Immigration Law Clinic, Parole and Reentry Clinic, Prosecution Clinic (third-year students only), and Juvenile Defense Clinic (third-year students preferred). Field placement opportunities this fall include Governmental Field Placement, Judicial Field Placement, and Public Interest Field Placement. Celebrating the Centennial Anniversary of the Nineteenth Amendment

The LSU Law Library will host the "100 Years After the 19th Amendment: Their Legacy, and Our Future" traveling exhibit beginning February 14 through February 25.  The 19th amendment gave women the constitutional right to vote.  The traveling exhibit has been brought to the Law Center by the Diversity and Professionalism Committee.  More information on the traveling exhibit is available at this LINK. Louisiana First Circuit Court of Appeal to hold oral arguments at LSU Law

The Louisiana First Circuit Court of Appeal will hold oral arguments at LSU Law on Wednesday, Feb.19 in the Robinson Courtroom beginning at 9:30 a.m. The First Circuit is one of five Louisiana intermediate appellate courts. The First Circuit's territorial jurisdiction extends over 16 parishes in the southeastern part of Louisiana. The court is domiciled in Baton Rouge and normally holds hearings at its courthouse located at 1600 North Third Street. LSU Law to host traveling exhibit celebrating centennial anniversary of Nineteenth Amendment

Beginning Saturday, Feb. 15, LSU Law will host the “100 Years After the 19th Amendment: Their Legacy, and Our Future” traveling exhibit in the LSU Law Library. A project of the American Bar Association Standing Committee on the Law Library of Congress, the exhibit celebrates the 100th anniversary of the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment with historic photos and artifacts—mainly from the Library of Congress—as well as details about the story of the battle for ratification and its influence on subsequent movements related to equal rights. Berkeley School of Law Dean Erwin Chemerinsky visits LSU Law to deliver 2020 Rubin Lecture, lead classes

The Robinson Courtroom at the LSU Law Center was filled to capacity on Thursday evening as Berkeley School of Law Dean Erwin Chemerinsky delivered the 2020 Judge Alvin B. and Janice G. Rubin Visiting Professor Lecture. Chemerinsky is one of the nation’s leading legal scholars on constitutional law. Baton Rouge area attorneys sought to judge Dean’s Cup Competition in March

The LSU Law Board of Advocates is seeking Baton Rouge attorneys who can serve as judges for the annual Dean’s Cup Moot Court Competition at the LSU Law Center in March. Judges are needed for five rounds of the competition taking place from 6 to 9:30 p.m. on March 9, 10, 11, 16 and 18. Attorneys can serve as a judge for single or multiple rounds of the competition. The Dean’s Cup Competition is an appellate advocacy competition in which second-year and third-year law students compete individually.
