LSU Law Moot Court Program Ranked 11th Nationally for 2018-19

The LSU Law Center’s Advocacy Programs have been ranked No. 11 in the nation in the Blakely Advocacy Institute’s ranking of moot court programs for 2018-19. This continues the Law Center’s upward climb in the rankings. LSU Law was ranked No. 25 last year, outside of the top 50 in 2016-17, and No. 35 in 2015-16. The ranking system looks at law schools’ success in the dozens of appellate advocacy (“moot court”) competitions held across the United States each year. The Law Center will be closed April 18, 2019

Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff – University administration has announced the closure of LSU tomorrow because of the likelihood of severe weather in the area.  The Law Center follows all campus decisions regarding safety and closure.  As a result, the Law Center will be closed tomorrow, April 18.  All scheduled meetings, activities, and events will be rescheduled, and the building will not be accessible. Because of the approaching holiday, the Law Center (and law library) were already scheduled to be closed Friday, April 19-Sunday, April 21.  The Law Center will reopen Monday morning in preparation for exams, and all activities…

LSU Law students prepare more than 150 tax returns during VITA program

LSU Law's Tax Law Society and Public Interest Law Society (PILS) hosted a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program at the Law Center and helped more than 150 tax returns for lower-income taxpayers, The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (VITA) is a service performed by volunteers with support from the IRS. VITA sites offer free tax help to a variety of lower-income tax payers (incomes less than about $53,000 per year). Joshua Newville named 2019 Advocacy Programs Coach of the Year

Joshua Newville (LSU Law '12) was named the recipient of the 2019 Kalinka Award for Coach of the Year at the Law Center's annual Advocacy Programs Banquet on April 9. Newville is one of the coaches of the Law Center's Costello Criminal Trial Team, which this year took home the national championship title. Former LSU Law professor Michael Coenen to deliver 2019 Law Center Commencement Address

Former LSU Law and current Seton Hall Law professor Michael Coenen will deliver the main address at the LSU Law Center’s 2019 Commencement ceremony, scheduled for Friday, May 24, at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. “The LSU Law Center is honored to welcome back Professor Coenen and have him address our graduates as our 2019 Commencement speaker,” LSU Law dean Tom Galligan said. “Through his teaching, scholarship and leadership, he has positively impacted the legal education of our 2019 graduating class. LSU Law team places third for prestigious 2019 Scribes Brief-Writing Award

LSU Law 2018 graduates Jessica Finley and Sara Kuebel and current 3L student Jacob Cunningham tied for third place for the prestigious 2019 Scribes Brief-Writing Award. Scribes, the American Society of Legal Writers, has presented an annual award for the best student-written brief since 1996. The competition reviews the winners of every “best brief” award from the dozens of regional and national moot court competitions held across the US each year, and a panel of attorneys, faculty, and sitting judges select the winning briefs from this pool. Extended Library Hours

Beginning Monday, April 8th through Sunday, May 5th, the Law Library will be open until midnight each night for the exam period. Check the Library Hours page for full details.  During the exam period, the Law Library will only be open to currently enrolled law students at both LSU and Southern after 5:00 p.m. including weekends. LSU Law teams place runners-up, national semifinalists in weekend competitions

LSU Law’s traveling moot court and trial advocacy teams enjoyed another weekend of great success from March 29-31. John R. Brown National Admiralty Law Moot Court Competition The Law Center’s Gold team of Hannah Crosby, Sarah Day, and Sarah Simmons placed runners-up in the national John R. Brown National Admiralty Law Moot Court Competition in Charleston, S.C. In addition, the Purple team of Katelyn Bayhi, Jacob Cunningham, and Michael Maldonado placed as national semifinalists.
