LSU Law Center Chancellor Jack Weiss welcomed students to the 2nd Annual Apprenticeship Week on Monday, January 5, 2015. The week-long program offers a variety of mini-courses aimed at providing students with focused, task-oriented training not generally available in law school courses and usually available only through actual practice experience. Courses offered include many practical, hands-on topics that are taught by volunteer master lawyers and judges.
Chancellor Weiss commended the law students who returned to school a week early to take advantage of the practical simulation courses taught during Apprenticeship Week.
“Why are you here? To learn by doing,” Chancellor Weiss told the students. “We are grateful to the Apprenticeship Week faculty—all volunteers—who have given up valuable time to teach our students,” he said.
The one-hour credit program is offered free to participating students. Students devote the week of the program to thoughtful preparation for class and diligent completion of the individual and group projects assigned. To enhance the communal experience and provide networking opportunities for students, each day includes an all student/all faculty lunch and mid-morning coffee break.
“This week should be a lot of work and a lot of fun,” said Professor John Church, Director of Apprenticeship Week. “This program gives you the opportunity to see how your Apprenticeship Week faculty practices their craft.”
