Professor Emeritus Helmut Koziol

Punitive Damages: A European Perspective

Professor Emeritus Helmut Koziol was born in Vienna (Austria), and
received his Doctor Juris degree at the University of Graz (1963). He
worked as research and teaching assistant in private law at the
University of Bonn (Germany) from 1963-1967, and in the Institute of
Civil Law of the University of Vienna (1967). He was awarded a tenured
professorship in private law in Linz (Austria), and since 1969, holds a
full professorship at the University of Vienna and is currently
Professor Emeritus. Since 1993, he has served as member of the
Executive Committee of the Zivilrechtslehrervereinigung (Society of
German speaking scholars of private law) and as a member of the
European Group on Tort Law. In 1994, he was appointed Head of the Law
Section of the Austrian Society for Banking Research. In 1997, he
became a member of the Board of the German Banking Law Association. In
1999, he became a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of
Sciences and Managing Director of the European Centre of Tort and
Insurance Law in Vienna. Since 2002, he is the Managing Director of the
Research Unit for European Tort Law of the Austrian Academy of Sciences
and since 2003 full member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. He is a
member of the commission set up by the Austrian Ministry of Justice in
2000 which is drafting a new Austrian tort law. In 2005, he received an
honorary doctorate by the University of Innsbruck (Austria).

The scholarship of Professor Emeritus Koziol resulted in the publication of
more than 10 books and more than 100 articles. He is editor of the Austrian
Law Journal, Bank-Archiv
and member of the board of editors of the German
review Zeitschrift für Europäisches Privatrecht.

Professor Emeritus Koziol has lectured in China, the Czech Republic,
France, Germany, Greece, Israel, Italy, Japan, Liechtenstein, Korea,
the Netherlands, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, the United
Kingdom and the U.S.A. He recently presented the European Principles of
Tort Law at the AALS Annual Meeting, Washington D.C., 2007.
