During 2008, an endowed scholarship was established at LSU Law in honor of John P. Laborde through the generosity of his wife, Sylvia Laborde, and his five children, J.Tracy Laborde, Cliffe F. Laborde, Gary L. Laborde, J. Peter Laborde, Jr., and Adrienne Laborde.
Mr. Laborde earned his B.A. degree from LSU, and is a 1949 graduate of LSU Law, where he is a past recipient of the Law Center’s Distinguished Alumnus award. Laborde, a co-founder of Tidewater Inc., served as Tidewater’s Chairman, Chief Executive Officer, and President for nearly 40 years and remains retired Chairman Emeritus. He was the founder and first chairman of what is now the Offshore Marine Service Association and has played a major role in the worldwide development of the offshore service industry. Additionally, he has received honorary doctorates from LSU and Loyola University.
Laborde has received numerous civic honors as well, including the Distinguished Citizen Award from the Boy Scouts of America, the St. Elizabeth’s Guild Volunteer Activist Award, and the Junior Achievement Lifetime Achievement Award.”
This scholarship will be awarded to an entering or current full-time student of the Law Center with a strong academic performance. The student may retain the scholarship for additional years if he or she remains in the top half of her or her class.
