The James J. Bailey Endowed Professorship of Law was established by the LSU Board of Supervisors in 1985 in honor of the late James J. Bailey, a member of the law class of 1934. James J. Bailey was born in Baton Rouge in September of 1911. He died in June of 1961 at the age of 50. His father was James J. Bailey, Secretary of State under Huey Long. He graduated from Catholic High School (“The Brothers”) in 1927. He was a sole practitioner with offices in the Romain Building on 3rd Street. During WWII he served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. He was married to Fairfax Foster of Franklin and they had three children. This professorship was made possible by donations from his children: James J. Bailey III, Prescott Foster Bailey and Virginia Bailey Noland. With their gift they noted, “our Father took great pride in the practice of law when undertaken with the highest professional ethics. We hope such pride will be inculcated in each future generation of LSU Law graduates.”
