Pugh Accardo Scholarship

Lawrence Pugh, III (’85) had already established his litigation career when he decided he wanted to take a personalized approach to how he worked with clients. He joined a group of attorneys with a similar philosophy to form Pugh, Accardo, Haas, Radecker and Carey, L.L.C., now Pugh Accardo, in 2008. Ever since, the firm has served the New Orleans and Northshore area representing clients both regionally and nationally.

Although the firm is recognized for its litigation practice, Pugh Accardo also provides counsel in Admiralty and Maritime Law, Workers’ Compensation and Employer Liability, Franchise Law, Intellectual Property Law, and Insurance Defense to name a few.

Their attorneys handle a variety of cases that are often settled before proceeding to trial. And for those that do go to trial, they are prepared to provide a competent defense. In 2022, Pugh filed a successful Motion for Summary Judgment that was affirmed by the Louisiana Fourth Circuit Court of Appeal. His accomplishment is one of many from the firm that has been nationally recognized. Pugh Accardo and their attorneys consistently rank in lists such as Martindale-Hubbell’s “Top Ranked Law Firms,” USNews’ “Best Firms” and “Best Lawyers,” The Best Lawyers in America, and Louisiana Super Lawyers.

Pugh acknowledges the value education and mentorship has had on his personal successes and the success of Pugh Accardo.

“All lawyers of a certain age realize that they didn’t get to where they are by themselves and that they had lots of help along the way,” Pugh said.

Because he credits a good legal education to building the foundation of a young lawyer’s career, he played an integral role in establishing the Pugh Accardo Scholarship at LSU Law in 2021.

Patrick Van Burkleo, a third-year law student at the Paul M. Hebert Law Center, was the first recipient of the scholarship.

“I am looking to move into the anti-trust field focusing on environmental and healthcare industries,” Van Burkleo said in a student profile. “I love civil procedure and complex litigation and want to pair that with my prior work experience in the healthcare field and my education in the environmental sciences.”

The Pugh Accardo Scholarship exemplifies Pugh’s philosophy of giving back to the Law Center and supporting students and young lawyers.

“It’s right to give back and let the cycle continue.”
