Student Profile

"I consider myself fortunate to have the friendships I have created thus far at the Law Center. The students I have met come from a wide array of backgrounds and their stories are equally diverse and interesting. There is a sense of unity and companionship throughout the Law Center that is fostered by our common goal to become successful practicing lawyers. I look forward to continuing these relationships long after leaving the halls of the Law Center."

Jason St. Julien

Class of 2011

LSU Law Student

Background: Received an associates in art degree from Frank Phillips Junior College in Borger, Texas; received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from North Carolina State in Raleigh, North Carolina; member of the N.C. State Baseball Team; taught for two years at Pearland Junior High South in Pearland, Texas; member of the LSU Law Ethics Committee; Chancellor’s Student Advisory Board; Black Law Students Association; PILS; LSU Law Football Club.

Why Law School: I initially sought out Ph.D. programs in psychology. I then realized that if I take the route of getting a Ph.D. in psychology, there is a great chance that I will be limited with what I can do with that degree. I began researching what law school is all about and through my research I concluded that a law degree opens many doors within the practice of law and also outside the practice of law. I believe a law degree will provide me with many options on where I want to take my life.

Why LSU Law: Three reasons: family, familiarity, and the dual training of Civil/Common Law. Though I am from St. Martinville, I grew up in Lafayette and attended high school there. Along with extended family in St. Martinville, three cousins reside in Baton Rouge and I have an aunt who lives in New Orleans. The youngest of my cousins, Ryan St. Julien, is a member of the football team and I am fortunate to have the opportunity to watch him play on Saturdays in Tiger Stadium.

Since I grew up in Lafayette, I am familiar with the area and the culture of Louisiana and Baton Rouge. This familiarity has eased my transition from teaching to entering law school. Dual training in the Common and Civil Law is a tremendous benefit of attending the Law Center. I believe that knowledge of both legal traditions is an asset that will aid me in my future legal career.

The combination of these three factors presented me with an opportunity that I couldn’t pass up.

The Faculty: The faculty members I’ve been involved with have all made a sincere effort to help students. Whether it’s a cup of coffee with Professor James Bowers, advice from Professor Darlene Goring and Professor Joseph Bockrath, or a visit to Professor Alain Levasseur’s office, the faculty are willing to assist students in becoming successful.

Just for Fun: I am a big fan of music. I play my saxophone regularly and attempt to play the piano wherever possible. Symphonic music is also very interesting to me and I plan to attend a Baton Rouge Symphony concert in the near future.

My motorcycle is my newest toy; I ride it as much as possible. I have family members in the area who also own motorcycles  and whenever we have the time, we meet up and go for rides. I am also a big fan of Zydeco music. I listen to Keith Frank, John Paul Jr., and Chris Ardoin. Whenever they are in town or in the surrounding area, I find time to enjoy their Zydeco music and dancing.
