Third-year student Michael Kostruba does not shy away from honesty when asked where he sees himself in the future.
After his graduation from LSU Law, Kostruba envisions a legal career with a lot of success and, yes, making a lot of money. But there is more than dollar signs that attracted Kostruba to studying the practice of law.
“My inspiration to apply to law school was not only the drive for the wealth that tends to come with the stereotypical narrative of the legal profession, but also the ability to represent people in the industries of my interest,” he said. “The ability that the legal profession offers to learn about different industries and businesses also provided me with some incentive to go after a career with complexity, variety, and excitement.”
Kostruba, who hails from Ontario, earned a degree in Speech Communications from University of Waterloo in Canada. He is a recipient of the Dean’s Scholarship in spring 2018 for achieving a top 25% semester average, and he said that has been especially helpful balancing tuition payments with the U.S. to Canadian currency conversion rate.
He is very thankful to the LSU community for his past scholarships and would like for alumni to know that their contributions offer many opportunities to law students.
Kostruba has competed in Moot Court and is the Vice President of the Louisiana Business and Law Society; the Entertainment, Media, and Sports Law Society; and the Space Law Society at LSU. He co-founded the Law Tennis Club and serves as a class representative.
In addition, Kostruba dedicates his time to serving on the Board of Advocates as the Director of External Dispute Resolutions Competitions.
Through his position on the Board of Advocates, Kostruba has focused on offering dispute resolution practice for students and expanding the degree of experimental learning at LSU.
“Increasing the availability of opportunities to practice skills involved with dispute resolution reflects the importance of continuing to grow the advocacy program at LSU Law,” he said. “With a personal interest in transactional work, from M&A to real estate, I am excited to be a part of the Board of Advocates, growing such competitive opportunities for LSU Law students.”
