Professor Jennifer Cooper will bring her legal writing expertise to LSU Law when she returns home to Louisiana to join the faculty at the LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center at the start of the Fall 2024 semester.

Since 2018, Cooper has served as Associate Professor of the Practice of Law at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law, where she also chairs the Lawyering Process Program, which provides students with an introduction to the essential lawyering skills, including research, writing, analytical thinking, and oral advocacy. She previously served as Visiting Assistant Professor of Lawyering Skills at the Seattle University School of Law, and an Adjunct Professor in the online Master of Jurisprudence Programs at Tulane University Law School.

“After teaching legal writing in two nationally ranked programs, I am thrilled to return to Louisiana and join LSU Law’s thriving community of scholars, faculty, librarians, and students,” said Cooper, who earned her undergraduate degree at LSU, where she was a staff writer and editor for The Reveille student newspaper and a DJ for KLSU. “I’m delighted to return to LSU’s flagship campus, and I’m passionate about preparing law students for client-focused practice, leadership, and the evolving landscape of legal work.”

After earning her J.D. from Seattle University School of Law in 2003, where she was an editor of the Seattle University Law Review, Cooper launched her legal career as an attorney with the Snohomish County Public Defender in Everett, Washington. She later moved into private criminal defense practice before serving as Assistant Director of the Academic Success Program at Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego, California.

“Professor Cooper’s experience and expertise, paired with her innovative approach to classroom instruction, will further elevate our already exceptional Legal Research and Writing Program at LSU Law,” said LSU Law Dean Alena Allen. “We cannot wait to welcome her back home to Louisiana.”

With a focus on legal writing, legal analysis, and oral advocacy, Cooper’s scholarship has been published in the Seattle University Law Review, NOVA Law Review, and St. John’s Law Review. Her best-known article, “Smarter Law Study Habits: An Empirical Analysis of Law Learning Strategies and Relationship with Law GPA,” was published in the Saint Louis University Law Journal. Cooper also frequently presents her scholarship at symposia and legal writing events held across the country.

Cooper is a founding member of the Association of Academic Support Educators, a member of the Legal Writing Institute and the Association of Legal Writing Directions, and chief academic officer of Lark Academic, which provides academic resources and consulting for legal education.
