The LSU Law Center has moved five spots upward in the 2013 U.S. News rankings of Law Schools, climbing to 79th in the closely watched list. The #79 ranking is the second highest in LSU Law history, bested only by the school’s ranking of #75 in 2010.
LSU Law entered the US News top 100 for the first time in 2004. As recently as 2008, the Law Center was ranked at # 91. The new ranking accentuates the Law Center’s positive movement in the rankings in recent years.
Some 195 law schools in the nation are reviewed by the magazine. LSU Law is one of only 9 public law schools from Texas to Florida, and only one of 3 law schools in Louisiana, Alabama, and Mississippi, public or private, ranked in the top 100.
“I’m pleased to report that we moved up five places, from # 84 to # 79,” said Chancellor Jack Weiss. “Taken together, the U.S. News ranking, our # 6 Best Value Law School designation (prelaw Magazine/a National Jurist Publication, 2011); the # 1 national ranking in Bar Exam Preparation (National Jurist, Spring 2012); and our #1Bar Exam passage rate in Louisiana, confirm that we are providing our students with an excellent legal education at a reasonable price.”
Weiss expressed some caution over the latest ranking.
“As I said last year, the U.S. News rankings are notoriously unpredictable and are, in part, very subjective. Every law school dean holds his breath until the rankings are announced,” said Weiss. “As always at LSU Law, we will continue to make decisions that are in the best interest of our students and the state of Louisiana. A good U.S. News ranking is lagniappe, not our overriding goal.”
Chancellor Weiss offered his congratulations to the students, faculty, and staff for their hard work. “Here’s hoping for an even brighter future for the Law Center,” he concluded.
