Increase in Law Center Tuition Approved by Legislature
June 27, 2008The Louisiana Legislature has approved a three-year, phased-in tuition increase for the LSU Law Center, effective Fall 2008. HB 1145 has been sent to the governor for signature. "We are never happy to increase tuition. Nevertheless, the Law Center is and will remain an excellent value to its students," said Chancellor Jack Weiss while commenting on the tuition bill. Louisiana residents' tuition will increase by $1,000 per year over the next three academic years. The nonresident fee will increase by a like amount. Duplechain Joins Communications/External Relations Office
June 27, 2008Joshua Duplechain has joined the Office of Communications and External Relations as Communications Coordinator. Duplechain will be responsible for news reporting, writing, and publication of the E on the Move newsletter. He is the former web editor in the Creative Services Department of LSU Public Affairs and a former news editor in the LSU Department of Media Relations. In his former roles, Duplechain served as editor of LSU Today and published the LSU Wire – a weekly e-newsletter. Bruno Named Acting Associate Director of Clinical Legal Education for Field placements
June 27, 2008Todd Bruno has been named acting associate director of Clinical Legal Education for Field placement Programs. As acting associate director, Bruno will assist with planning and implementing the Law Center’s expanded offering of field placement programs during the 2008-09 academic year. Professor Bruno joined the Law Center as assistant professor in Fall 2001. He has taught legal writing and appellate advocacy, and serves as faculty coordinator of the Law Center's award-winning moot court and mock trial programs. Clinical Legal Education Program Funded in 2008 Regular Legislative Session
June 27, 2008The Louisiana Legislature has approved, as part of the overall state budget, an appropriation of $471,600 to support the expansion of the LSU Law Center's Clinical Legal Education Program. The clinical program will offer students the opportunity to represent live clients in dealings with actual court cases and other legal problems. It also will offer field placement opportunities for students in federal, state and other governmental agencies, as well as community organizations. June 24, 2008In the days, weeks, and months following Hurricane Katrina, there were many concerns at the top of people's minds. The welfare of the Louisiana legal system, however, was probably not one of the concerns keeping people awake at night. Levasseur has been appointed as one of 12 foreign members—each one coming from a different civil law jurisdiction—to the Scientific Council of the Fondation pour le droit Continental, or Foundation for Continental Law.The Council—also made up of 10 French members who include professors, notaries, judges, bankers and corporate officers—is the "brain" of the Foundation, acting as a breeding ground for future programs, projects, publications and initiatives in the fields of research and education in the domains of law and economics. Lake Charles Natives Pledge $500,000 to Forever LSU Campaign
June 3, 2008(photo courtesy of LSU Public Affairs) Lake Charles natives Oliver "Rick" Richard and his wife, Donna, have pledged $500,000 to the Forever LSU campaign from their foundation, the Rick and Donna Guzman Richard Charitable Foundation. The gift supports the A Tradition of Excellence campaign underway at the LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center, and also provides support to the Manship School of Mass Communication.
