Admitted Students Get an Inside Look at LSU Law Center

Over 45 admitted applicants attended Visiting Day for Admitted Students on March 17 at the LSU Law Center in the McKernan Auditorium. These admitted applicants represented 10 states and over 20 undergraduate institutions with majors such as engineering, biology, education, journalism and philosophy.

LSU Energy Law Moot Court Team Places Second in the Nation

LSU Law students Mark Assad and Christopher Caswell placed second in the nation at the National Energy and Sustainability Law Moot Court Competition that was hosted by the West Virginia University College of Law in Morgantown, West Virginia on March 15 to 17. Twenty teams from around the country competed in the competition. This year’s competition examined the federal regulation and shutdown of a faulty nuclear power plant in the months following the disaster at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant in Japan. U.S. Senator J. Bennett Johnston to Serve as LSU Law Commencement Speaker

LSU Law Center Chancellor Jack M. Weiss has announced that former U.S. Senator J. Bennett Johnston has been selected as the commencement speaker for the 2012 graduation exercises. The commencement ceremonies will be held Friday, May 25, 2012, at 9:30 a.m. in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center on the LSU campus.

LSU Law Center Climbs Five Spots to #79 in 2013 U.S. News Law School Rankings

The LSU Law Center has moved five spots upward in the 2013 U.S. News rankings of Law Schools, climbing to 79th in the closely watched list. The #79 ranking is the second highest in LSU Law history, bested only by the school’s ranking of #75 in 2010.

Annual Chancellor’s Council Dinner Features Lawyer and Journalist Adam Liptak

Lawyer and journalist Adam Liptak was the guest speaker at the annual LSU Law Center Chancellor’s Council dinner that was held at the Hilton Baton Rouge Capitol Center on March 2, 2012. Mr. Liptak, who covers the U.S. Supreme Court for The New York Times, discussed cases pending before the Court. Mr. Liptak also spoke with students and the LSU community earlier in the day in a special event hosted at the LSU Law Center.

Louisiana Law Review Presents “Coastal Land Loss in the Gulf Coast and Beyond”

Jessup Team Brings Home Top Oralist and Writing Awards

Congratulations to Lauren Anderson, Eden Davis, Shannon Kelly, Thomas McCall, and Claire Popovich, who competed at the Southeast Super-Regional of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition in Houston, Texas February 24 through 26, 2012. Kelly and Davis were undefeated in their preliminary rounds at the Super-Regional.  Of the 92 oralists at the competition, Anderson was the eighth-highest-scoring oralist, while McCall received an award for being in the top 20 best oralists.  The team also received an award for writing the eighth-place memorial (brief). National Environmental Team Receives Best Oralist Recognitions

Law students Anna Brown and Kellyn Elmer each received an individual “Best Oralist” recognition during their three preliminary rounds at the annual National Environmental Moot Court Competition. Pace Law School in White Plains, New York was the setting for this year’s competition. With over seventy teams consisting of over two hundred individual competitors from law schools across the country, the National Environmental Moot Court competition is one of the largest and most prestigious moot court events in the country, and is the most competitive of the many environmental law competitions held nationally. Kalinka/Stutes Tax Moot Court Team Wins Second Runner-Up

Law students Rebecca Luster, Kelly Burris, and Edward Waters with the Law Center’s Susan C. Kalinka/Russell J. Stutes, Jr. Tax Moot Court Team took home third place at the 2012 National Taxation Moot Court Competition that was held February 2 through 4 in Clearwater, Florida.  The competition is sponsored by the Tax Section of the Florida Bar Association, and features judges from the US Tax Court and tax attorneys from across the country. The Kalinka/Stutes Tax Team went undefeated in its preliminary rounds, ultimately placing as second runner-up at the national competition. LSU Law to Offer Free Tax Assistance to Foreign Students, Teachers and Researchers

March 1, 2012

The LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center offers a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program where law student volunteers provide free tax preparation services for federal and state income taxes to foreign students, teachers and researchers that qualify as non-resident taxpayers. Individuals who have F, J, M, or Q visas are eligible for assistance.
