Planning for Clinics Moves Ahead
December 14, 2007The Law Center is moving forward with plans to expand its clinical legal education program by Fall 2008. "A three-year plan is under development to phase in live client clinics, expand opportunities for real-life practice field placements, and make available additional public interest law projects at the Law Center," according to Professor Lucy McGough, who has been appointed by Chancellor Jack Weiss to spearhead the Center's efforts. McGough is widely recognized within the American Bar Association for her work and scholarship related to clinical education. A Tradition of Excellence - Campaign Update
December 12, 2007A Tradition of Excellence: The Campaign for LSU Law is in full gear! In addition to events held in past months in Covington, Houma, Lake Charles, Monroe, Shreveport, and Washington, D.C., Baton Rouge areas alums gathered on Monday, December 10 to meet Chancellor Jack Weiss and to kick off the campaign in the metro region. Chancellor Weiss, together with campaign steering committees located in Louisiana and Texas, are spearheading the $28 million Campaign for LSU Law. A significant portion of the goal, some $15 million, is for scholarship funds to aid in student recruitment and to relieve financial debt. Over…

The Young Alumni Leadership Council has first meeting
December 12, 2007The Young Alumni Leadership Council, a newly-appointed group of LSU Law graduates, had its first meeting the weekend of December 7. Chancellor Weiss formed the group to secure a more broad range of feedback on ways in which the Law Center can be responsive in preparing students for the ever-changing practice of law. Eighteen of 20 members met for dinner on Friday evening. Baton Rouge Area Graduates Welcome Chancellor
December 11, 2007More than 150 Baton Rouge area graduates convened in the Student Lounge on December 10 to meet Chancellor Jack Weiss. Chancellor Weiss talked with alumni about the Law Center’s plans for a clinical legal education program, the recruitment of new faculty to replace a number of professors slated to retire in the near future, and the importance of increasing opportunities for student engagement at the Law Center. Class of 1967 Endows Scholarship
December 11, 2007One of Chancellor Jack Weiss’ initiatives is a challenge to graduates to use the occasion of their reunions to establish a Class Gift that will benefit future students. The Class of 1967 was the first to meet the challenge and did so in a big way, establishing the LSU Law Class of 1967 Endowed Scholarship. Chancellor Weiss accepted a gift of $60,000 from class representatives at the November 9 reunion. The endowment will be matched by $40,000 from the Judge Paul B. Young Alumni Leadership Council Meets for First Time
December 11, 2007Chancellor Jack Weiss announced the formation of a newly created Young Alumni Leadership Council. The council, comprised of 20 members representing alums from the past 10 graduating classes, "will offer feedback on ways in which the Law Center can be responsive in preparing students for the ever-changing practice of law," said Chancellor Weiss. He asked the group to serve as "the eyes and ears for the law school in their worlds." LSU Law Hosts Symposium on Presidential Power and Terrorism, November 9
December 10, 2007Members of the LSU community gathered on November 9 to hear Law Center professors discuss the constitutionality of detention, interrogation techniques, and trial of terrorism suspects. The symposium was held in conjunction with Alumni Reunion Weekend at the Law Center. The free symposium, titled Presidential Power and Terrorism: Detention, Interrogation and Trial, featured Law Professors John Baker, Ed Richards, and John Devlin. The trio discussed the legal issues posed by detention, interrogation, and trial of terrorist suspects and how these challenge our common understanding of the rule of law. Chancellor to Chair LSU AD Search
December 10, 2007Law Center Chancellor Jack Weiss will serve as the chair of the search committee for LSU's new Athletic Director. Chancellor Sean O'Keefe made the announcement December 5. Distinguished Alumnus Brunch
December 5, 2007It was standing room only as the LSU Law Center honored Michael H. Rubin as its 2007 Distinguished Alumnus. Friends, colleagues, fellow grads, and family members joined in the celebration and presentation of the award by Chancellor Jack Weiss. This award, presented each year, recognizes a graduate who demonstrates personal and professional achievements, loyalty to the Law Center, and fidelity to the highest ethical standards.
