Law Students Compete at National Pretrial Competition

The LSU Law Center’s National Pretrial Competition team of Ben Aguiñaga, Ahmed Mohamed, Scott Ogden, and Alexandra Porubsky, placed sixth overall and won fourth place best defense brief at their competition, which was held October 16-19 at Stetson University College of Law in Gulfport, FL.  LSU Law was one of 16 law schools that competed. The pretrial team writes a brief in support of a pre-trial motion. This year’s case file dealt with the need for additional discovery in a Fair Labor Standards Act case. LSU Law Ties for First Place at Saluki Invitational Jury Trial Competition

LSU Law Center's Saluki Invitational Jury Trial Competition team: Robert Ross, Sarah Massoud, Vivian Jeansonne, Lance Neyland, Angelina LaCour, Coach Lindsay Jarrell-Blouin ('12) and Dan Farris. The LSU Law Center’s Saluki Invitational Jury Trial Competition team of Dan Farris, Vivian Jeansonne, Angelina LaCour, Sarah Massoud, Lance Neyland, and Robert Ross, tied for first place at the Saluki Invitational Jury Trial Competition, which was held October 23-25 at the Southern Illinois University School of Law in Carbondale, IL.   Team member Dan Farris also took home the competition’s Best Oralist award. Peebles and Stanford Win 2014 Robert Lee Tullis Moot Court Competition

The Honorable Richard Bourgeois, Mary Margaret Peebles, Honorable James J. "Jim" Brady ('69), Professor Michael Coenen and Stephen Stanford at the 2014 Tullis Competition. Mary Margaret Peebles and Stephen Stanford are the winners of the 2014 Robert Lee Tullis Moot Court Competition. The competition was held October 23 in the Robinson Courtroom. World Treaty Library

The Law Library is pleased to announce the addition of a new database: World Treaty Library. This HeinOnline collection brings together works from Rohn, Dumont, Wiktor, and Martens to create the richest collection of world treaties ever available, covering the time period from 1648 to the present. All together it includes more than 160,000 treaty records. Now for the first time, patrons will be able to search across all the major treaties in the world in this one database. Connection

Class of 2015 Celebrates Hats ‘n Canes

The Class of 2015 celebrated the annual Hats ‘n Canes celebration on Saturday, October 25. The graduating class gathered on the front steps of the Old Law Building sporting black hats and carrying canes, as Chancellor Jack Weiss toasted the class using the cane of the Law School’s first dean, Joseph Kelly.

Chancellor Appoints Diversity Task Force

October 24, 2014

In response to an expression of concern from the President of the Black Law Students Association and another student, Chancellor Jack Weiss announced yesterday the appointment of a broadly based task force that will consider and make recommendations to the faculty and the Administration on means by which the Law Center can help all students, including minority students, succeed, foster camaraderie, and promote better understanding of one another's cultures and experiences. The task force will include students, Law Center faculty and staff, and graduates of the Law Center.

LSU Law Students Achieve State’s Highest Passage Rate on July 2014 Bar Exam

LSU Law Center students achieved the state’s highest passage rate among all examinees on the latest Louisiana State Bar Exam, according to results released October 17 by the Committee on Bar Admissions of the Supreme Court of Louisiana. The results are for test takers who sat for the statewide Bar examination in July 2014. Of all LSU Law test takers in July, 81.50% successfully passed the exam. Among LSU graduates taking the bar exam for the first time, 85.81% passed.

LSU Law Center Announces Alumni Leadership for Chancellor’s Council and Annual Fund

The LSU Law Center has announced the alumni leadership for the 2014-15 Chancellor’s Council and Annual Fund, two of the Law Center’s philanthropic initiatives. J. Rock Palermo III (’92) will serve as the Chair of the LSU Law Center Chancellor’s Council program, and R. Patrick “Pat” Vance (’75) will serve as Co-Chair. Annual Fund Chair Amy Lambert (’96) and Co-Chair Timothy Daniels (’85) are enlisting fellow LSU Law graduates from across the state to help increase alumni participation in annual giving.

Civil Mediation Clinic Provides Opportunities to Develop Dispute Resolution and Negotiation Techniques

The Civil Mediation Clinic (CMC) is an intensive program that trains second and third year law students in dispute resolution techniques and negotiation theory in order for them to mediate live cases for members of the public. During the semester, the students must devote 150 hours of their time in class sessions, discussions, exercises, writing assignments, mediation simulations (three per student) and actual mediations at Baton Rouge City Court and the Clinic facilities. The mediation simulations are a minimum of one-hour long, are videotaped, uploaded to the Panapto video-editing software, and strenuously critiqued by the instructor, whose comments are displayed…

LSU Law Clinic to Offer Legal Services to Sexual Assault Survivors

A new collaborative effort between the LSU Law Center and the Sexual Trauma Awareness and Response (STAR) organization will establish a new law clinic focused on civil needs of sexual assault survivors. The grant to the LSU Law Center was announced on October 6, and the new program will assist survivors in the Capital Region.
