National Win for LSU Law Pretrial Team
October 18, 2013The LSU Law Center’s National Pretrial Competition team recently took First Place at the National Pretrial Competition, one of the most intensive law school advocacy competition experiences in the United States. The LSU Law team of Danielle Borel, Doran Drummond, Matthew Hamilton, and Sikandar Mehr was one of 16 law schools from around the country that competed for a chance to win the competition.

The Constitution and The Supreme Court: Previewing the 2013 Term
October 14, 2013In commemoration of Constitution Day on September 17, Vice Chancellor Ray Diamond and Professors Michael Coenen and John Devlin discussed and took questions from students on the major constitutional issues the Court is set to address, such as: The meaning of the Recess Appointments Clause; The scope of Congress’s powers to implement treaties; The constitutional validity of statewide affirmative-action bans; and First Amendment limits on government-sponsored prayer. As part of the discussion, the professors discussed three cases pending before the U.S. Supreme Court: NLRB v. Canning, Schuette v. Coalition to Defend Affirmative Action and Town of Greece v. Galloway.

LSU Law Tops Bar Examination Results
October 11, 2013LSU Law Center students achieved the state’s highest passage rate among all examinees on the latest Louisiana State Bar Exam, according to results released October 11 by the Committee on Bar Admissions of the Supreme Court of Louisiana. The results are for test takers who sat for the statewide Bar examination in July 2013.

LSU Law Receives Liskow & Lewis Professorship to Support Energy Law Program
October 11, 2013LSU Law Center Chancellor Jack M. Weiss has announced the creation of the Liskow & Lewis Visiting Professorship in Energy Law, an endowment established through a gift by the Liskow & Lewis law firm. The Professorship provides funds to bring distinguished scholars in energy law and closely related fields to the Law Center on an annual basis as part of the LSU John P. Laborde Energy Law Center. Professor Hannah Jacobs Wiseman, a rising star in the field of energy law, delivered the inaugural lecture for the Liskow & Lewis Visiting Professorship in Energy Law series.

Strong Showing for first Apprenticeship Week
October 9, 2013More than 130 LSU Law 2Ls and 3Ls have submitted applications for the inaugural Apprenticeship Program, to be held on campus January 6 through 10, 2014. LSU Law Chancellor Jack M. Weiss sent a message to students congratulating them on their willingness to devote their pre-semester vacation time to the innovative program.

Teaching Fellow and Assistant Professor of Professional Practice Katherine Macfarlane's essay "The New York Stop-and-Frisk Appeals Are Still Alive" was recently published by Practicum, the online companion to Brooklyn Law School's journals.
On December 6, 2013, Vice Chancellor Ray Diamond was a panelist on the subject “Race in the Gun Debate” at the Northeast People of Color Legal Scholarship Conference at the University of Puerto Rico School of Law. On November 9, 2013, he was a roundtable participant on a panel entitled “Race, Crime, and Stand Your Ground in Historical Perspective,” at the annual meeting of the American Society for Legal History. These presentations built on his most recently published article, “In the Civic Republic: Crime, the Inner City, and the Democracy of Arms - a Disquisition on the Revival of the Militia at Large” (with Robert J. Cottrol), 45 Connecticut Law Review 1605 (2013).
The Journal of Corporation Law has published Professor Christina Sautter’s article, Lock-Up Creep, which she co-authored with Professor Steven M. Davidoff of The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law.

The Honorable Shelley Dick (’88) of the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Louisiana, the Honorable William Morvant (’85) of the 19th Judicial District Court and the Honorable Trudy White (’81) of the 19th Judicial District Court, judged the competition which took place September 30 at the LSU Law Center.

October 10: Liskow & Lewis Visiting Professorship in Energy Law Inaugural Lecture
October 2, 2013Professor Hannah Jacobs Wiseman, a rising star in the field of energy law, will speak at the LSU Law Center on Thursday, October 10 as the inaugural lecturer in the Liskow & Lewis Visiting Professorship in Energy Law series. The lecture, “Enhancing Sub-Federal Renewable and Fossil Energy Governance,” will take place at 5:00 p.m. in the David W. Robinson Courtroom at the Law Center. This event is free and open to the public.
