NBLSA Thurgood Marshall Mock Trial Competition team placed as Quarterfinalists

Congratulations to the Law Center’s NBLSA Thurgood Marshall Mock Trial Competition team, who placed as Quarterfinalists at the Southern regional rounds of the competition, which were held Jan. 20-23 in Durham, NC.  The NBLSA team consists of students Kathryn Jakuback, Hannah Marler, Kiara Taite, and Kendale Thompson.  The team was coached by Mr. Michael Heier (’13) of the Louisiana Attorney General’s Office, Ms. Morgan Lamandre of Sexual Trauma Awareness & Response (STAR), and Professor John Devlin.

LSU Law to Offer Free Tax Assistance to Foreign Students, Teachers and Researchers

January 27, 2016

The LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center offers a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program where law student volunteers provide free tax preparation services for federal and state income taxes to foreign students, teachers and researchers that qualify as non-resident taxpayers. Individuals who have F, J, M, or Q visas are eligible for assistance.

LSU Law Takes 5th Place in National Arbitration Competition

Congratulations to the Law Center's American Bar Association Competition team of Robert Cavell, Caitlin Cline, Rome Gonsoulin, and Matthew Roth, who placed fifth in the nation at the Arbitration Competition's national championships, which were held Jan. 20-23, 2016, at the American Bar Association's headquarters in Chicago, IL.

Former Students and Participants in Juvenile Defense Clinic Square Off in U.S. Supreme Court Case

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled today on a case presented by LSU Law alumni and former participants in the Center’s Juvenile Defense Clinical Legal Education program. LSU Law alums squared off on both sides of Montgomery v. Louisiana (case No. 14-280).

Master Lawyers and Judges Participate in Third Annual Apprenticeship Week

Some 140 second and third-year students turned out for the third-annual LSU Law Apprenticeship Week held January 4 -8, 2016. The program offers a variety of mini-courses aimed at providing students with focused, task-oriented training not generally available in law school courses and usually available only through actual practice experience.

Frank Maraist Lecture Hall Campaign Launched by Students, Friends and Colleagues

Professor Frank Maraist was known for asking his students, "Are you running with me?," as a way of judging their comprehension and zeroing in on those suspected of losing track during his fast-paced lectures! In December, a group of former students, friends and colleagues, launched a campaign to name The Frank L. Maraist Lecture Hall (Room 110) in honor their teacher, mentor, friend and colleague. The steering committee, led by Ralph E. Kraft ('75), has been hard at work during the silent phase of the campaign, raising nearly $200,000 toward the $500,000 goal.

Community Turns Out for Symposium on Criminal Sentencing Reform

Leaders of the criminal justice system, the state and local legal community, along with concerned community members, engaged in a day-long discussion on criminal sentencing reform during the 2016 Louisiana Law Review’s symposium held on Friday, January 22, 2016. Entitled, Throw Away the Key: Criminal Sentencing Reform in the 21st Century, the symposium featured experts and legal scholars from across the nation.

Law Center Mourns Passing of Professor Emeritus Thomas Harrell

Professor Emeritus Thomas A. Harrell passed away on January 20, 2016. Professor Harrell was a Coif graduate of the Law Center, Class of 1951. Professor Harrell joined the Law Center and served on the faculty for twenty-three years, teaching courses in mineral rights (oil and gas), property, security devices, corporations, contracts, oil and gas taxation, law office practice, Civil Law Systems, oil and gas law seminars, and security in moveables (U.C.C. Art. 9).

John Bel Edwards ('99) Sworn in as Governor of Louisiana

January 11, 2016

John Bel Edwards was sworn in today as the 56th Governor of Louisiana. A 1999 graduate of the LSU Law Center, Edwards graduated as a member of The Order of the Coif and served on the Louisiana Law Review. Prior to his election as governor, Edwards served as the State Representative for Louisiana District 72.
