Nine students from five countries in the LLM Program began their studies at the Paul M. Hebert Law Center in the fall semester, including a Belarus native who was awarded a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship to pursue her Master of Laws degree at LSU Law.
Six other LLM students from two countries are also studying at the Law Center this fall. They were originally scheduled to arrive at LSU Law last fall, but the pandemic forced them to wait until the spring semester to begin their studies. They will study at LSU Law through the end of the fall semester, while the other nine LLM students will remain at the Law Center through the end of the spring 2022 semester.
Professor Olivier Moréteau, Assistant Dean for International Programs, says LLM Program enrollment has remained strong despite the pandemic and an increasingly competitive market for several reasons, including the program’s affordability, academic quality, and robustness.
LSU Law is routinely named among the Top 10 budget LLM programs in the U.S. by LLM Guide, which has also named the program one of the Top 10 worldwide for Energy Law. The program also allows LLM students to tailor their coursework to match their individual interests and explore a wide variety of courses to suit their professional goals. LSU Law is the only law school in the country that has a fully integrated common law and civil law legal education, which provides LLM students with a global legal education and the skills needed in today’s highly competitive legal market.
Another thing that sets the LSU Law LLM Program apart is its inclusiveness. Rather than only taking classes with others in the program, LLM students at LSU Law take classes alongside students who are pursuing their J.D. The program operates with “a very personal system of mentoring, making us more like a boutique rather than a supermarket,” says Moréteau.
Among the LLM students at the Law Center this fall is Natallia Bulko of Minsk, Belarus, a recipient of a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship. Approximately 4,000 foreign students from roughly 160 countries around the world are awarded Fulbright scholarships each year to study in the U.S. Fulbright Scholarships are awarded through a highly competitive, merit-based competition, and scholars are able to research and study for up to two years at U.S. universities to pursue master’s degrees in a variety of fields.
Bulko earned a Specialist law degree from Belarusian State University, which requires five years of legal study. She was highly active in moot court competitions while in law school, competing internationally in commercial arbitration, trade law, and private law. She also worked for nearly four years as a legal counsel with international logistics firm AsstrA, where she was responsible for contract drafting, corporate procedures, and pre-trial dispute resolution.
