LSU Law Professor and Chancellor Emeritus John Costonis was presented with the 2018 H.M. “Hub” Cotton Award winner for Faculty Excellence at a ceremony May 2 at the Lod Cook Conference Center. The award recognizes a faculty member with a distinguished record of teaching, research, administration, public service, or any other outstanding contributions to the university.
“He has contributed mightily in every phase of the academic venture, with a record of research and scholarship and a passion for teaching in which he challenges his students with cutting-edge instruction of current and complicated legal issues,” LSU Law Dean Tom Galligan said in his nomination letter. “Chancellor’s Costonis career has been an exemplary one and one that stands as a model for aspiring young legal scholars and teachers.”
Costonis served as Chancellor of the LSU Law Center from August 1998 to June 2007. He currently is Chancellor Emeritus and the Albert Tate Professor of Law at LSU, where he teaches course in environmental law, historic preservation, land use law, law of the Louisiana coast, property, federal public land, and resources law.
During his tenure, LSU Law saw unprecedented progress and growth in the quality and diversity of its students and faculty. A decade of full engagement as a teacher, scholar, and public servant has followed his return.
His scholarship is pivotal to land and preservation law and he has written a series of important articles on the intersection of federal and state laws surrounding coastal issues and the BP oil spill.
Students and faculty also laud him as a willing and understanding mentor.
