The Louisiana Legislature has approved, as part of the overall state budget, an appropriation of $471,600 to support the expansion of the LSU Law Center’s Clinical Legal Education Program.
The clinical program will offer students the opportunity to represent live clients in dealings with actual court cases and other legal problems. It also will offer field placement opportunities for students in federal, state and other governmental agencies, as well as community organizations.
“This is a critical initiative for the Law Center,” said Chancellor Jack Weiss, “one that benefits our community and state, while providing hands-on opportunities for our students.”
A number of clinics will be available in Fall 2008. Among the opportunities offered are a Domestic Violence Clinic, Family Mediation Clinic, and a Juvenile Representation Clinic. Field placement opportunities for the fall include Tax and Criminal Justice. The Law Center also expects to have a Judicial Field placement program this fall.
Professor Robert Lancaster has been hired as the director of the Clinical Legal Education Program.
