The Public Interest Law Society student organization at LSU Law and the Office of Career Services are teaming up to host a series of events at the Paul M. Hebert Law Center during Public Interest Week, Oct. 24-27.
The events kick off on Monday at 12:40 p.m. in Room 110 with a panel of legal professionals in various public interest sectors. The hour-long event will feature guest speakers including Ahmed K. Soussi (’18), a voting rights staff attorney at the Southern Poverty Law Center; Neal Favorite of the Colorado Public Defenders Office; Kyla Romanach, director of the Baton Rouge Capital Conflicts Office; and Jasmine Cole, a reentry specialist at Parole Project. Lunch will be provided for attendees.
On Tuesday, a “Pro Bono as a Passion” panel will take place in Room 106 from 12:40 to 1:40 p.m. featuring guests speakers in the private law sector who are significantly involved with pro bono work. Panelists include Kenneth Mayeaux, attorney and founder of Mayeaux & Associations; Adam Parker, attorney at Butler Snow; Franz Borghardt (’06), attorney and founder of Borghardt Law Firm; and Jane Hogan (’13), attorney at Parole Project. Lunch will be provided for attendees.
Also Tuesday, a “Public interest Pays” presentation will take place at 3:30 p.m. in Room 106, at which Professor Jeffrey Brooks will speak about loan forgiveness through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program and his journey with the program. Refreshments will be served.
A public interest meet-and-greet will take place in the LSU Law Library on Thursday from 12:30 to 2 p.m., at which interested in public interest will have the opportunity to network with local firms and organizations, including Crescent Care Legal Services, Louisiana Policy Institute for Children, Sexual Trauma Awareness & Response (STAR), Southeast Louisiana Legal Services (SLLS), The Parole Project, Disability Rights Louisiana, and more.
Public Interest Week events will wrap up with a Public Interest Mixer for LSU Law students, faculty, and alumni at the LSU Club at Union Square at 6 p.m. The event will feature keynote speaker Keith Nordyke (’79), a founding charter member of The Louisiana Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and networking opportunities with local public interest firms and organizations. Food and drinks will be served. RSVP to attend.
