Betsy West, co-director and co-writer of “My Name is Pauli Murray,” will attend a special screening of the Peabody Award-winning documentary at the LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center on Friday, Feb. 23, and participate in a panel discussion with LSU Law and LSU faculty members following.
Free and open to the public, the “My Name is Pauli Murray” screening and symposium will take place in the McKernan Auditorium from 12:30 to 4 p.m. It is sponsored by The George W. and Jean H. Pugh Institute for Justice. RSVP to attend.
The documentary follows the life of Pauli Murray, the late lawyer and activist who was instrumental in arguing the equal protection clause of the fourteenth amendment that outlawed discrimination based on sex. It won a prestigious Peabody Award in 2022.
West will join LSU Law Professor Raymond Diamond, and LSU Professors Kodi Roberts (History) and Angeletta Gourdine (English) for a panel discussion following the screening.
West is a video journalist and filmmaker who formerly co-directed “RBG,” a theatrical documentary about U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg that was released in 2018. West was also executive producer of the documentary “Makers: Women Who Make America,” which was narrated by Meryl Streep and distributed by PBS as a three-part TV series in 2013.
Along with her husband, filmmaker Oren Jacoby, West is a principal of New York-based production company Storyville Films. She joined the faculty of the Columbia Journalism School in 2009 after a three-decade career in network news. As a producer and executive at ABC News, she received 21 Emmy Awards and two duPont-Columbia Awards. At Columbia, she taught classes in reporting, video production and documentary, and currently serves as professor emerita.
