LSU Law students Ananda Sherwood-Saul and Caidyn Thompson won the Fall 2023 Ira S. Flory Mock Trial Competition on Monday, Sept. 25, besting classmates Summer Knight and Jacob Lester in the Flory finals in the McKernan Auditorium at the LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center.

In what was one of the largest internal mock trial tournaments in LSU Law history, the Fall 2023 Flory Mock Trial Competition began with 37 teams in the preliminary round. In the final round of competition, Sherwood-Saul and Thompson represented the prosecution, while Lester and Knight represented the accused, in a negligent homicide trial that was loosely based on the 2021 shooting that occurred on the set of the film “Rust.”

To recognize their exceptional performance in the tournament, students on each of the finalist teams received an automatic invitation to membership in the Board of Advocates, a student honor organization dedicated to the promotion and development of oral and written persuasive advocacy skills.

The distinguished panel of judges presiding over the final round of competition included the Hon. Judge Tiffany Foxworth-Roberts of the 19th Judicial District Court, Baton Rouge Capitol Conflict Office Director Kyla Romanach, and Advocacy Programs Director Professor Jeff Brooks.

Named in honor of the late LSU Law professor, the Ira S. Flory Mock Trial Competition is a mock trial competition open to all second-and third-year law students. A Flory Trial is held each semester, with the fall Flory trial traditionally being a criminal case and the spring Flory trial being a civil case.
