Rising 2L Kayla Meyers chose to attend LSU Law after she learned about the Public Interest Law Society’s Fellowship program.

“I thought it was an amazing way to encourage students to do public interest work,” Meyers said.

Eager to learn more about public interest law, she attended a student organization fair during her first semester where she met LSU Law Assistant Director of Career Services McKinzie Hall.

“She told me about the internship at the ACLU of Louisiana and I immediately knew I wanted to pursue it,” Meyers said.

The ACLU of Louisiana works to advance and preserve constitutional rights and liberties of individuals and extend the rights of individuals who have traditionally been denied their rights.

Throughout the academic year, Meyers prepared her application for the internship with guidance from the LSU Law Office of Career Services and Hall, who specializes in public interest opportunities. Meyers was not only successful in obtaining the internship, but she also received a PILS fellowship.

“I give most of my credit to Kinzie,” Meyers said. “She is an amazing counselor.”

In her internship, Meyers disseminated communication on case updates and conducts research for different attorneys. She says she has found the experience helpful as she learns to communicate legal information to clients, other attorneys, and the public.

Meyers also says the internship with the ACLU has been a dream come true.

“This what I’ve always wanted to do,” Meyers said, adding she would have taken on an additional part-time job just to participate in the internship had she not received the fellowship. “I’m so grateful to have the opportunity to do what I love and care about it.”
