2023 Order of the Coif: Joshua M. Pruett

What are your immediate career plans?

I accepted a position as a construction litigation associate at Peckar & Abramson starting in the fall.

What are your long-term career aspirations?

I would like to be a law firm partner and mediator/arbitrator.

Please tell us about the organizations and activities you participated in at LSU Law, including any awards or honors you received.

I served on the editorial board for the Journal of Energy Law and Resources as production editor.

Please tell us about any LSU Law faculty, classes, or other experiences that were particularly impactful on your legal education.

Professor Darlene Goring was my professor for the Legal Methods short course in 2020. Her instruction and feedback were critical to helping shape my approach to law school exams. The Civil Mediation Clinic was a superb experience that gave me a chance to help resolve real problems for real people and improve my understanding and skill in negotiating.

Professor Nick Bryner’s instruction in administrative law and environmental law were excellent introductions to regulatory practice and a glimpse into something more than standard litigation. I also found the apprenticeship week Intro to Construction Law particularly insightful.

What are your fondest memories from your time at LSU Law?

Getting to know a few of the excellent students in my 1L section and other classes. I feel like I have forged a number of high-quality friendships that will be highlights in my professional network moving forward. Also, my externship with Chief District Judge Shelly Dick was a great view into the work of the judiciary and I enjoyed seeing live proceedings firsthand.

What advice would you give to students entering law school who aspire to become an Order of the Coif member when they graduate?

Figure out how to write analytically. Suspend your pride and prejudices. Work smart, find ways to help you learn without burning out. Study with others. Learning is better when you can reinforce the things you learn with someone else. Don’t forget to make time for family or friends. I am a husband and a father of four. I made time for family dinners, bedtime routines, and weekend outings. It was stressful, but my family ties were reinforced without too much damage to my schoolwork.
