2023 Order of the Coif: Emily Vest

What are your immediate career plans?

My immediate career plan is to relocate to Dallas, Texas, and join Holland & Knight LLP as a first-year associate with the firm’s litigation practice group.

What are your long-term career aspirations?

At this time, I am not sure what my long-term career aspirations are. I’m really excited to have such a great opportunity with Holland & Knight and picture myself trying to achieve partnership in the years to come.

Before I came to law school, my goal was to have my own plaintiff’s firm one day. So perhaps I will have my own firm years down the road. However, during law school, I also realized that I enjoyed post-conviction work, so there is the possibility that I will end up doing some type of post-conviction work down the road.

Please tell us about the organizations and activities you participated in at LSU Law, including any awards or honors you received.

While at LSU Law, I was involved in various organizations and activities, including:

  • Louisiana Law Review, Volume 83 Production Editor
  • Louisiana Law Review, Volume 82 Junior Associate and Article Manager
  • Tutor for Torts (Professor John Church)
  • Tutor for Constitutional Law I (Professor John Devlin)
  • Student Ambassador for the LSU Law Office of Admissions
  • Student Bar Association Student Mentor
  • Scholarship Awards: Susan A. Halsey Memorial Scholarship; Teanna W. Neskora Scholarship; T.J. Moran Endowed Law Scholarship
  • CLEA Outstanding Clinic Student Award (2023)
  • CALI Award for Constitutional Law I
  • CALI Award for Juvenile Defense Practicum
  • CALI Award for Juvenile Defense Clinic Course
  • CALI Award for Parole Assistance & Re-entry Clinic Practicum

Please tell us about any LSU Law faculty, classes, or other experiences that were particularly impactful on your legal education.

While at LSU Law, the clinic courses I was lucky enough to be a part of were incredibly impactful on my legal education. I had the opportunity to participate in the Parole Assistance & Re-entry Clinic my second year of law school and the Juvenile Defense Clinic my third year of law school. My professors in both of these clinic courses were phenomenal. Thank you to Professors Robert Lancaster, Keith Nordyke, Jane Hogan, Jack Harrison, and Lakita Leonard. I could not have chosen better people to guide me.

In addition to my clinic experiences, every single class I had with Professor John Devlin left me more confident, knowledgeable, and excited for a career in the law.

After taking Employment Discrimination and Employment Law with Professor Bill Corbett, I think my calling, at least right out of law school, might be in employment law, so those courses also had an meaningful impact on my legal education.

What are your fondest memories from your time at LSU Law?

Some of my fondest memories from my time at LSU Law come from my interaction with my peers. Although we started law school together in face masks and had to practice social distancing, as the years went on, I got the chance to become close with a number of my classmates because of our shared experiences. Of course, I will always look back fondly on Barrister’s Ball, Assault and Flattery, LSU Football Tailgates, and the time I spent with the LSU Law Office of Admissions.

What advice would you give to students entering law school who aspire to become an Order of the Coif member when they graduate?

If I had to give a piece of advice to students entering law school who are aspiring to become an Order of the Coif member when they graduate, my advice would be this: Read for class. Outline. Study. Ask questions. If you put in the effort, becoming a member of the Order of the Coif is within your reach.
