2023 Order of the Barristers: Olivia Day Maynard

What are your immediate career plans?

I’m in the process of interviewing for a few judicial clerkships in Louisiana, and I hope to hear back soon!

What are your long-term career aspirations?

It is my goal to eventually work for a federal agency such as FERC or the EPA. I am interested in working in any capacity at an agency but particularly interested in creating regulations and enforcement.

Please tell us about the organizations and activities you participated in at LSU Law, including any awards or honors you received.

During the fall semester of my second year at LSU Law, I had the opportunity to participate in the Tullis Moot Court competition alongside my partner, Lea Daigle. We advanced to the quarterfinals and received an award for our brief, and I was also awarded sixth place best oralist in the competition.

Please tell us about any LSU Law faculty, classes, or other experiences that were particularly impactful on your legal education.

I am grateful to all the professors who shaped me into the legal thinker I am today, but I am especially thankful for Professor Keith Hall and Professor Nick Bryner.

Professor Hall had a profound impact on my legal education at LSU. I had the privilege of taking every class he taught, and they played a vital role in shaping my understanding of the law. In particular, his International Petroleum Transactions class was instrumental in providing me with practical and legal experience in contract reading and interpretation.

Professor Bryner encouraged me to expand my legal education beyond the immediate legal issues and consider the broader impact of legal decisions on the community. Through his Natural Resources course, I learned to analyze and compare different environmental ethical perspectives within the law and understand the intricate interplay between them. It was a great privilege for me to take his classes, and I would highly recommend it to any prospective student interested in environmental law.

What are your fondest memories from your time at LSU Law?

For me, the fondest memories are the everyday moments spent with the staff, faculty, and fellow classmates that stand out the most. While LSU Law has provided me with numerous opportunities, it’s the remarkable individuals who have made my experience truly unforgettable.

What advice would you give to students entering law school who aspire to become an Order of the Barristers member when they graduate?

Try everything. Even if something scares you or you’re afraid you’ll fail, you won’t know what you enjoy and don’t enjoy unless you try!
