2023 Order of the Barristers: John Rodrigo Arboleda

What are your immediate career plans?

I will be entering the Army JAG Corps after sitting for the bar exam in Florida.

What are your long-term career aspirations?

My long-term career aspirations are to work at the U.S. Attorney’s Office or as a Criminal Trial Judge sometime in the very distant future.

Please tell us about the organizations and activities you participated in at LSU Law, including any awards or honors you received.

I was a member of the Board of Advocates, Hispanic Law Students Association, Federalist Society, Running Club, and Veterans Advocacy Club, and I also served as a Law Ambassador.

I won the Fall 2022 Ira S. Flory Mock Trial Competition, and I received a CALI award for Appellate Advocacy and Practice.

I participated in external competitions, as well as in the Tullis, Spring Flory 2023, and Fall Flory 2023 competitions. I also had the opportunity to work on and submit an amicus brief alongside some classmates to the Air Force Criminal Court of Appeals.

Please tell us about any LSU Law faculty, classes, or other experiences that were particularly impactful on your legal education.

Professor Darlene Goring and Professor Jeff Brooks had a large impact on me during law school. They were incredibly encouraging and were internal to my success in law school. The competitions I participated in, particularly the Estrella Competition in the spring 2022 semester, also had a major impact on me.

What are your fondest memories from your time at LSU Law?

All three years there were many things that I highly enjoyed. I will fondly remember the tailgates and the competitions that I participated in, as well as the friendships that I built through my three years here.

What advice would you give to students entering law school who aspire to become an Order of the Barristers member when they graduate?

Do as many competitions as you reasonably can; practice makes perfect. Advocacy is the kind of thing you will get better at by actually doing. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and do something you think you might not be as good at, because you might surprise yourself.
