2023 Order of the Barristers: Hannah E. Cottrell

What are your immediate career plans?

After graduation, I will be a law clerk in the chambers of the Honorable Christian N. Weiler at the U.S. Tax Court. I am so grateful and excited for the opportunity to begin my career in tax law!

What are your long-term career aspirations?

I would like to continue working in tax law. I am especially interested in working for the government.

Please tell us about the organizations and activities you participated in at LSU Law, including any awards or honors you received.

I was the Director of External Dispute Resolution Competitions for LSU Law’s Board of Advocates. I also competed in a variety of external trial advocacy and dispute resolution competitions through LSU Law’s advocacy program. Upon graduation, I received a Graduate Certificate in Estate Planning and Taxation and I also earned a CALI award in Advanced Legal Research.

Please tell us about any LSU Law faculty, classes, or other experiences that were particularly impactful on your legal education.

Participating in LSU Law’s Civil Mediation Clinic was an amazing experience. I was able to gain practical legal experience. Professor Paul Breaux is extremely knowledgeable, passionate, and an excellent educator.

I also completed a field placement at the Louisiana Department of Revenue. I am grateful for the practical experience I gained. Mr. Antonio Ferachi was a superb supervisor and mentor. We had many valuable discussions about the different career paths and areas of focus available within tax law.

Professor Jeff Brooks has also been a wonderful mentor! He has offered me so much support throughout my time at LSU Law.

What are your fondest memories from your time at LSU Law?

One of my fondest memories from my time at LSU Law is 1L oral arguments. Going into the Robinson Courtroom and arguing in front of Professor Grace Barry was an incredible experience and the perfect culmination to my 1L year. I was able to see how much I had learned and how well LSU Law was preparing me to become a lawyer!

What advice would you give to students entering law school who aspire to become an Order of the Barristers member when they graduate?

Get involved in the Law Center’s advocacy program as early as possible! The internal and external competitions are tons of fun, and you will learn so much by doing them. There is also a lot of variety in the competitions you can compete in, which gives you a great opportunity to learn about many different fields of law!
