2023 Order of the Barristers: Cory A. Lewis

What are your immediate career plans?

I will be starting as an associate attorney with Kuchler, Polk, and Weiner in New Orleans.

What are your long-term career aspirations?

Eventually, I would like to be able to focus on civil rights impact litigation to help LGBTQIA+ people here in Louisiana, as well as the southern United States generally.

Please tell us about the organizations and activities you participated in at LSU Law, including any awards or honors you received.

I was the President of LSU Law Center’s Board of Advocates for the 2022-2023 year, and twice participated in the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court competition.

Please tell us about any LSU Law faculty, classes, or other experiences that were particularly impactful on your legal education.

The internal and external competitions I was able to compete in during my 2L and 3L years cemented my desire to work in litigation. Professor John Devlin’s Constitutional Law II class left a large impact on my legal thinking, highlighting that purposive and creative legal theories can make enormous impacts in our world.

What are your fondest memories from your time at LSU Law?

My fondest memories from LSU Law are when friends and I would have drinks at The Chimes following internal competitions, as well as traveling to Washington D.C. with our wonderful Jessup Team and exploring that city with them.

What advice would you give to students entering law school who aspire to become an Order of the Barristers member when they graduate?

Be curious beyond your 1L classes. Go see any and all internal competitions you can. Surround yourself with people who are as dedicated to advocacy as you are. Have fun and embrace the chaos.
