A pair of LSU Law Costello National Criminal Trial Competition teams brought home National Semifinalist and National Quarterfinalist titles from the 15th Annual John L. Costello National Criminal Law Trial Advocacy Competition, which was held in Washington D.C. on Feb. 9-12.

The LSU Law “Gold” team consisting of Ananda Sherwood-Saul and Caidyn Thompson took the National Semifinalist title, placing as one of the top four teams overall, while LSU Law “Purple” team members Angelle Boudreaux and Scott Wheat Jr. placed as National Quarterfinalists.

Both LSU Law Costello teams were coached by Lindsay Blouin (’12) and Joshua Newville (’12), trial attorneys with Baton Rouge-based law firm Manasseh, Gill, Knipe, & Bélanger, as well as LSU Law Advocacy Fellow Charles Watkins.

The Costello Competition is uniquely designed to take participants outside the typical realms of law school advocacy competitions. By revealing unknown facts and witnesses as the competition progresses, the Costello Competition simulates the evolving and unexpected nature of real-life criminal trials. Preliminary rounds of this year’s competition were held at the George Mason University Antonin Scalia Law School, and advanced rounds were held at the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.
