178 students receive degrees at 2019 LSU Law Center Commencement ceremony

Front row, from left: LSU Law professor Randall Trahan, Sara Grace Daniel, William Anton Milburn, Nena Marie Eddy, Ashley Renee Delaune, Justin Andrew DiCharia, LSU Law professor Melissa Lonegrass and LSU Law dean Tom Galligan. Back row: Briana Rose Falcon, Milton Joseph Hernandez IV, Max McCain Roberts, David Gerard Albano, Hayden Oliver Bigby and Thomas Clay Naquin.

The LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center awarded degrees to 178 students during Commencement ceremonies held Friday, May 24, at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center, with former LSU Law and current Seton Hall Law professor Michael Coenen delivering the Commencement address.

“This class molded and shaped an identity as a concerned, collaborative, committed and concentrated group,” LSU Law Dean Tom Galligan said. “They have made this law school a better place. I thank them, and I praise them.”

In his remarks, Galligan reflected on the students’ first week of law school in 2016, in which historic flooding in Baton Rouge forced the postponement of orientation and classes. Galligan said this group of students rallied around each other to provide help to those affected by the storm with both property damage and emotional distress.

“This class was metaphorically born of that storm,” he said. “They were, in a way, born as a unit from that flood. They have survived, and they have thrived.”

LSU Law’s 2019 graduating class represents 25 Louisiana parishes, 15 U.S. states and five countries. Men made up 59 percent of the class, and women made up 41 percent.

LSU Law awarded the Juris Doctor degree to 170 students, with 139 of those students also earning the Graduate Diploma in Comparative Law and four earning the Graduate Certificate in Energy Law and Policy. Eight students received the Master of Laws degree.

“You can achieve for yourself a sort of long-running success,” Coenen said. “Class of 2019, go out into the world and do great things. Long may you run.”

Joining in this year’s commencement ceremonies were members of the LSU Law Center Class of 1969, this year’s Golden Graduates, who celebrated their 50th anniversary of their graduation from law school.

James Williams, member of the LSU Board of Supervisors, conferred degrees on behalf of the Board. LSU President F. King Alexander delivered remarks to the graduates.  3L Class President Meagan Johnson served as mace bearer, and Carlos D. Coro, Student Bar Association President, welcomed graduates and guests.

“When you’re faced with a decision about popularity or doing what’s right, know that popularity comes and goes. But doing what’s right with your legal experience and your legal knowledge, can have inter-generational impact for the rest of your life, and the lives of generations well beyond our own,” Alexander said. “Congratulations, graduates of the Class of 2019. Go out there and do what’s right.”

Three students — David Albano, Justin DiCharia and Max Roberts — graduated Summa Cum Laude, ranking within the top two percent of the graduating class. Eighteen students graduated Magna Cum Laude, and 23 students graduated Cum Laude.

Seventeen students were elected to membership in The Order of the Coif, a national honorary law fraternity that elects to membership students from the highest 10 percent of the third-year class. Inductees were honored in a separate ceremony at the Law Center prior to commencement. LSU Law also named 10 students into the Order of the Barristers, a national honorary organization that promotes oral advocacy and brief writing skills through effective law school oral advocacy programs.
