LSU Law 3Ls Caity Cline and Rome Gonsoulin won the Fall 2016 Ira S. Flory Mock Trial Competition on Tuesday evening at LSU Law.
Cline and Gonsoulin successfully defended their client in the case judged by Judge Anthony Marabella, 19th Judicial District Court, State of Louisiana; Hillar Moore, East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney; and Michael Mitchell, Chief Public Defender for the Baton Rouge Public Defender’s Office.
Cline and Gonsoulin represented Jonathan Spencer on one charge of aggravated arson. Spencer was accused of intentionally detonating an improvised explosive device in his fifth-floor apartment in the Baxter Building in retaliation for being served with an eviction notice by the building manager.Cline and Gonsoulin argued that Spencer, a pyrotechnics enthusiast, constructed a homemade firework that accidentally detonated.
3L students Doug Nielsen and Halee Snellgrove Maturin represented the State of Louisiana and finished runners-up in the 20-team competition.
