LSU Law Center Chancellor Jack M. Weiss has announced the creation of the Liskow & Lewis Visiting Professorship in Energy Law, an endowment established through a $200,000 gift by the Liskow & Lewis law firm.  The Professorship provides funds to bring distinguished scholars in energy law and closely related fields to the Law Center on an annual basis as part of the LSU John P. Laborde Energy Law Center.  The gift was in response to the Law Center’s desire to create an interdisciplinary, 21st century Energy Law program that will prepare today’s graduates for the complex world of energy law practice.

“LSU Law is deeply grateful to Liskow & Lewis for this significant gift to our burgeoning Energy Law program,” said Chancellor Weiss. “The Liskow & Lewis Visiting Professorship will directly benefit our students by bringing to campus each year a distinguished scholar or leader in Energy Law. Since its inception, the firm of Liskow & Lewis has stood for the highest level of excellence in Energy Law.  We are truly proud to be associated with that great professional tradition.”

“Liskow & Lewis and the Law Center have had a longstanding and strong relationship,” said R. Keith Jarrett, Liskow & Lewis’ firm President and Managing Partner. “Our firm has always looked to LSU for top graduates to join us, and have lent our support to the school and its students through scholarships and other gifts over the years. Providing support for a Visiting Professorship in Energy Law was a natural fit for us, as our firm prides itself on being in the forefront of Louisiana energy law. With this sponsorship, Liskow & Lewis is proud to support continued excellence in energy law in our state.”

In addition to the new endowment, the Liskow and Lewis law firm previously established the LSU Law Center’s Liskow and Lewis Professorship of Law in 1995, and the firm annually supports a large scholarship, The Liskow & Lewis Annual Scholarship, that benefits five LSU Law students each year.

Professor Hannah Jacobs Wiseman, a rising star in the field of energy law, delivered the inaugural lecture for the Liskow & Lewis Visiting Professorship in Energy Law series.  The lecture, “Enhancing Sub-Federal Renewable and Fossil Energy Governance,” took place on October 10 at the Law Center.

Professor Wiseman is an Assistant Professor at the Florida State University College of Law.  Her research focuses on the challenges of governing rapidly changing, multijurisdictional issues in energy, land use, and environmental law. She has written and spoken extensively about these challenges in the context of shale gas development and renewable energy. Her articles have been published in the Georgetown Law Journal, the Harvard Environmental Law Review, and the Harvard Business Law Review Online, among many others. Professor Wiseman is a co-author on the forthcoming fourth edition of the textbook Energy, Economics, and the Environment (Foundation Press). She taught as a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Texas School of Law and an Assistant Professor at the University of Tulsa School of Law before moving to FSU, and she has also taught energy law and shale gas short courses at Lewis and Clark Law School and the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. She was a clerk for Judge Patrick Higginbotham of the federal Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. Professor Wiseman received an A.B. from Dartmouth College, summa cum laude, and her J.D. from Yale Law School.
