LSU Law to Offer Free Tax Assistance to Foreign Students and Teachers

This event has passed- 2008 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA)

The LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center offers a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program where volunteers provide free tax preparation services to foreign students, teachers, and researchers. Individuals who have F, J, Q, or M visas and their immediate family members (spouse and children under age 21) are eligible for assistance.

The VITA Program has assisted more than 300 foreign students, teachers, and researchers at the university and in the Baton Rouge community in preparing federal and state income tax returns.

In 2005, the LSU Law Center’s VITA Program was honored by the American Bar Association Student Division as the best program of its kind in the country.

Dates for service:
March 11, 12, 13, 18, 19, 20, 25, 26, 27 (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings) from 6 p.m.-8 p.m.
March 29 (Saturday morning) 10 a.m. -12 noon

Rules for eligibility:

Students
Must have an F, J, Q, or M visa

Must have been in the U.S. for five or fewer years, as of December 31, 2007 (e.g., first entered the U.S. in 2003). For students who first entered the U.S. before 2003, the student is eligible for the tax preparation services offered at the LSU Law Center’s VITA program if the student does not intend to reside permanently in the U.S.

Teachers and Researchers
Must have a J or Q visa

Must have been in the U.S. for two or fewer years out of the six years preceding and including 2007. For example, if a teacher or researcher first entered the U.S. as a student, teacher, or researcher in 2006 or 2007, the teacher or researcher is eligible for the tax preparation services offered at the LSU Law Center’s VITA program.

What to bring:
· Visa

· Passport

· Form W-2 (if you received one)

· Form 1042-S (if you received one)

· Form 1999-MISC (if you have one)

· Form 1098 (if you have one)

· Copy of 2006 federal income tax return (if you have one)
