State Treasurer John Neely Kennedy will speak at the Thursday, May 24, 2007 LSU Law Center Commencement exercises. Chancellor John J. Costonis will preside over the 10:30 a.m. ceremonies in the LSU Pete Maravich Assembly Center.
Some 180 students will receive degrees. LSU System President William L. Jenkins will speak to the graduates and assist in conferring of degrees. Also assisting Chancellor Costonis in the conferring of degrees will be Board of Supervisors member Francis M. "Hank" Gowen, Jr. (’71). The Honorable Robert W. Kostelka, State Senator, District 35, will speak on behalf of the LSU Law Class of 1957. The class will celebrate its 50th year reunion following the Commencement.
Caroline Dana Preis, 2007 LSU Law Center Senior Class President, will offer the Invocation. The Star Spangled Banner will be sung by Brian Bonin.
Mr. Kennedy received a Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia in 1977. He is also a graduate of Oxford University in Oxford, England, where he received a B.C.L. in 1979. He was first elected Treasurer in 1999. From 1996-1999, he served by gubernatorial appointment as Secretary of the Louisiana Department of Revenue.
Ceremonies honoring the 2007 student members of The Order of the Coif will be held at 9 a.m. in the Law Center’s McKernan Auditorium. The Order of the Coif is the highest academic honor that graduating law students may receive. Speaking as Honorary Member of The Order of the Coif will be Justice Jeffrey P. Victory. Justice Victory was elected to the Louisiana Supreme Court in 1994. He received his Juris Doctor in 1971 from Tulane University School of Law.
