LSU Law Students Achieve State’s Highest Passage Rate on July 2006 Bar Exam

LSU Law Center students achieved the highest passage rate among all examinees on the latest Louisiana State Bar Exam, according to results released today by the Committee on Bar Admissions for the Supreme Court of Louisiana.

LSU Law students continued their traditional first place passage rate, with 91% of examinees receiving passing scores on the July 2006 administration of the Bar. Of the 201 LSU Law Center students who took the exam in July 2006, 183, or 91%, successfully passed the Bar. The rate represents a 7.1% increase in LSU Law students’ passage rate over the July 2005 results.

Bar passage is required before graduating law students may practice in Louisiana. The results, released by the Committee on Bar Admissions, compare percentage of examinees passing the Bar among the state’s public and private law schools and out-of-state colleges.

Results on the July 2006 Bar Admissions for overall passage by all examinees are as follows:

SCHOOL # Applicants Passed Conditioned Failed
LSU 201 183 (91%) 14 ( 7%) 4 (2%)
LOYOLA 129 99 (77%) 19 (14%) 11 (9%)
SOUTHERN 133 81 (61%) 28 (21%) 24 (18%)
TULANE 62 52 (84%) 7 (11%) 3 ( 5%)
OTHER 109 66 (61%) 16 (14.0%) 27 (25%)
TOTAL: 634 481 (75.87%) 84 (13.25%) 69 (10.88%)

Each year, a number of students retake the exam. The passage rate of re-examinees is included with first-time examinees scores to produce the number and percentage for overall passage.

Chancellor John Costonis attributed the success to the hard work and due diligence of LSU Law Center’s students and its faculty.
