Extracurricular

The Law Center offers a plethora of upperclassman opportunities to experiment with and hone one’s practice skills after completion of the 1L fundamental education in professional practice.

  • Intraschool opportunities include the Trial Advocacy Board’s 2L Opening Statement Competition and the Ira S. Flory Trial Competition,  and the Moot Court Board’s Robert Lee Tullis Moot Court Competition
  • Interschool opportunities include a wide assortment of trial and appellate competitions across the nation as well as the Vis International Arbitration Competition held annually in Vienna, Austria. For more information see the Law Center’s Moot Court website.
  • First Circuit Court of Appeal—Each spring semester,  the First Circuit Court of Appeal convenes at the Law Center. Students are exposed to real oral arguments by real practicing attorneys from all across the state. The Professors of Professional Practice coordinate this event as part of the Appellate Advocacy component of the 1L curriculum. The students are given copies of the docket and copies of all briefs filed.  Then the students are scheduled to sit in on assigned oral arguments for discussion in class. The entire experience requires detailed long-term planning and cooperation on the part of legal writing faculty at the Law Center and judges and staff at the First Circuit Court of Appeal.
