Veterans

The Veterans Legal Clinic at LSU provides students with the opportunity to gain experience representing former military service members. All work is supervised by experienced faculty.

Law students enrolled in the Veterans Legal Clinic will gain experience in administrative law with Federal administrative agencies, including the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Defense. Under the supervision of the clinic director, students will handle at least one case involving a service-connected disability compensation appeal or request for reconsideration of discharge status. In representing their veteran clients, students will develop an array of critical lawyering skills, such as client interviewing and counseling, fact investigation, legal research and writing, case planning, development of legal theory, as well as written and oral advocacy. In the clinic, students will practice these legal skills and will learn the applicable substantive and procedural law. The students will collaborate with doctors and mental health providers in gathering medical and mental health records. In addition, students will explore issues related to professional responsibility and development.
