Biography
Paul W. Breaux has taught the LSU Law Center’s Civil Mediation Clinic since 2011. He received his BA in English, with a minor in History, from the University of Southwestern Louisiana in 1989. He has over 30 years of mediation experience, and began his mediation career upon graduation from L.S.U.’s Paul M. Hebert Law Center in 1992 with the Louisiana Department of Labor’s Workers’ Compensation Office. He was named the Chief Mediator/Administrative Coordinator of the OWC in 1994. While there he assisted parties statewide in resolving hundreds of conflicts, was responsible for evaluating the Mediation Program and individual mediators, developed and implemented a training system for the O.W.C. Mediation Program, trained new attorneys in mediation skills and techniques, presented speeches to attorneys and various industry groups regarding how to get the most out of the mediation framework, and produced a quarterly newsletter distributed to OWC offices statewide entitled “Meditations on Mediation”.
Breaux is the owner of Peacemakers Mediation Service, LLC in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, which he established in 1997. In 2002 he worked with the Human Resource Department of the Louisiana Department of Labor to redesign the appeals process of the Performance Planning and Review (PPR) system for the Office of Workforce Development. This included creating and implementing a dispute resolution program within that process, training Human Resource personnel to act as third-party neutrals, and creating and presenting a mandatory training program for 100+ managers of the Department. This redesigned PPR process won a Best Practices Award from the Louisiana Department of State Civil Service.
Breaux is a current member of the Louisiana Law Institute’s Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee, the past two-term Chair and current Council Member of the LSBA’s Alternative Dispute Resolution Section, a member of the Baton Rouge Bar Association and the Dispute Resolution Section of the ABA. He has conducted hundreds of mediation conferences involving workers' compensation, medical malpractice, personal injury, employment, family business and construction disputes since 1992, including post-Katrina mediations pursuant to the Louisiana Department of Insurance Hurricane Mediation Program. In addition, Mr. Breaux conducts mediation training workshops for approved CLE credit, and has received more than 250 hours of mediation training through the LSBA, the National Judicial College, American Arbitration Association (AAA), MAPS, and others.
