HILLAR MOORE III
District Attorney • East Baton Rouge Parish
Born and reared in New Orleans, Hillar Moore III grew up in a household of seven children helmed by the late Hillar Moore Jr. and Bernadine Moore. His father, a Marine and veteran of the Vietnam War, served as president of the Associated Grocers for 19 years.
After graduating from Brother Martin High School in 1972, Moore moved to Baton Rouge to study criminal justice at LSU, which led to his first job collecting evidence and surveying crime scenes as an investigator for the East Baton Rouge District Attorney’s Office, a position he held for 12 years. During this time, Moore also trained at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia, and graduated magna cum laude from Southern University Law Center.
He then went into private practice for 16 years, specializing in criminal defense, before being elected to serve as East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney in 2008. He was subsequently re-elected to six-year terms in 2014 and 2020.
Moore is an active member of St. Aloysius Parish church and is a member of the Catholic High Men’s Club. He and his wife, Dawn, have three children: Hayden, Hillar IV, and John Michael. In rare moments of free time, More enjoys vegetable gardening and supporting all LSU and Southern University sports teams.
