Citation

The Digest is divided into three Books. Each Book is divided into Titles. Titles may be divided into Chapters, Chapters into Sections, and Sections into Paragraphs.

Unlike modern Codes, articles are not numbered in a continuous manner. The numbering restarts with article 1, at the beginning of each Title.

The following example shows how you may cite the Digest Online:

  • Article 1 of Title 3 (Of Contracts and of Conventional Obligations in General) of Book 3 (Of the Different Manners of Acquiring the Property of Things) reads:
  • “A contract is an agreement by which one or more persons oblige themselves to one or more other persons, to give, to do, or not to do a certain thing.”
