Professor Walter van Gerven

An Emerging Common Law for Europe? The Future Meeting the Past
Professor Walter van Gerven obtained his J.D. at the University of Leuven, in Belgium, in 1957. Since earning his degree, he has taught European community law, and private and comparative law at numerous domestic and international law schools including Harvard, McGill, Oxford, and Cambridge. He was a teaching fellow at the University of Chicago from 1959-1960 and later a visiting professor in 1968 where he succeeded Professor Max Rheinstein and taught French contract and tort law. From 1970-1976 and again in 1981-1982, he was Vice Rector of the University of Leuven and was in charge of the social sciences faculties. He was the president of the Belgian Banking Commission and controlled the supervision of banks and bank holding companies from 1982-1988. From 1988-1994, he was the Advocate General of the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg. Professor van Gerven is a member of the Dutch Academy of Sciences, the European Academy of Sciences and the Belgian Academy of Sciences, of which he was president in 1991. He is the author of approximately 10 books and 250 legal periodical articles on European community law, and private and comparative law. Currently, Professor van Gerven is the General Editor of the series Case Books for a Common Law of Europe and is the main author of a casebook on Torts in its second edition.
