Translation Program
Under the leadership of Prof. Olivier Moréteau and in partnership with the University of Nantes, France (Master Program in Trilingual Legal Studies), the CCLS conducts a legal translation program.
Louisiana Civil Code, French Translation
Over a period of six years (2011-2016), the Center of Civil Law Studies at Louisiana State University produced a French translation of the current Louisiana Civil Code, published gradually on the Louisiana Civil Code Online webpage (LCCO), alongside with the English version. Both the original English and the French translation are regularly updated.
The French translation project was completed in July 2016, with the support of a Partner University Fund grant by the FACE Foundation, supporting French-American cultural exchange in education and the arts, in partnership with Université de Nantes (Master in Trilingual Legal Studies).
The translation revives the original French (the Codes of 1808 and 1825 were written in French and translated into English) when no or little change has been made in the course of subsequent revisions. The French and English versions of the old codes can be consulted online in the Compiled Edition of the Civil Codes of Louisiana, accessible from the LCCO webpage.
In July 2017, the Paris based Société de législation comparée published Code civil de Louisiane, Édition bilingue, with a foreword by Jean-Claude Gémar and an introduction by Olivier Moréteau, the translation project director. Click for review by Jean-Louis Baudoin.
Pendant près de six ans (2011-2016), le Center of Civil Law Studies de la Louisiana State University a produit une traduction en français de l’actuel Code civil de Louisiane, publié progressivement en ligne sur le site Louisiana Civil Code Online (LCCO), en parallèle avec la version anglaise. Le texte original en anglais et la traduction française sont régulièrement mises à jour.
Le projet de traduction en français fut achevé en juillet 2016, grâce à une subvention Partner University Fund de la Fondation FACE, en collaboration avec les services culturels de l’Ambassade de France aux États-Unis, en partenariat avec l’Université de Nantes (Master Juriste Trilingue).
La traduction fait revivre le texte français d’origine (les Codes de 1808 et 1825 furent écrits en français et traduits en anglais) lorsque le texte n’a pas ou peu changé au cours des révisions successives. Les versions françaises et anglaises des anciens codes peuvent être consultées en ligne à partir de la Compiled Edition of the Civil Codes of Louisiana, accessible depuis le site du LCCO.
En juillet 2017, la Société de législation comparée, basée à Paris, a publié le Code civil de Louisiane, Édition bilingue, avec une préface de Jean-Claude Gémar et une introduction par Olivier Moréteau, le directeur du projet de traduction. Voir la brève recension par Jean-Louis Baudoin.
Dictionary of the Civil Code
Under the supervision of Prof. Alain Levasseur, Prof. Olivier Moréteau and his team of legal translators cooperated in the translation from French into English of the civilian vocabulary of the Vocabulaire Juridique Cornu, a project coordinated by the Association Capitant (France). O. Moréteau translated 128 entries in a total 1,600. This translation project promotes two hundred years of practice of the civil law in English in the State of Louisiana and a few other mixed jurisdictions, particularly Quebec.

Uniform Commercial Code, French Translation
In the spring semester 2017, a team of Nantes graduate students (Camille Audebaud, Laura Potvain, and Yasmina Saadane) started the translation of the UCC Article 1. The webpage for this project is under construction.
