This case book is available in two formats (regular hardbound, or hardbound-plus-extra-digital-content). Choose whichever you prefer.

Hardback $255.00, (link) (without digital content), ISBN: 9781642427622

Casebook Plus Version $275.00, (link), ISBN: 9781647083304

Note to Students: The Casebook Plus version comes with a new, hardbound copy of the book, lifetime digital access to the e-book version, online self-assessment quizzes, and a 12-month subscription to digital study aids (nutshell, exam pro, Law Dictionary, etc.). This upgraded version is not required, but it is a recommended option for those who will use the digital content. It includes a law dictionary (which you must otherwise purchase separately for this course).

Optional Add-on Digital Content License (for purchasers of used books only): Hazard, Fletcher, Bundy, and Bradt's Cases and Materials on Pleadings and Procedure- $35.00, (link). If you purchase a used casebook and would like to get access to Casebook Plus digital content, this option allows you to buy 12 months of access to the digital content.

Use code WALSU for a 15% discount if purchasing books directly from WestAcademic.com. Please do not use the older edition of the casebook.

    other necessary books:

Choose ONE Law Dictionary and ONE Federal Rule Book, Not all!

    1. Law Dictionary your choice - Black's, Bouvier, or Gilbert's (Note: Casebook Plus Above Includes Gilbert's Dictionary)

old, used paperback, or digital versions of a law dictionary are fine - please pick a convenient format that you will actually use (and carry with you where you study)

    2. 2021 Federal Rules of Civil Procedure - your choice of publisher. The big legal publishers sell these for $40-70. (The Student's Guide to Civil Procedure is $73.00). While those pricey versions are perfectly acceptable, you don't need to spend that much. Here are a few inexpensive options:

    • 2021 Federal Civil Rule Booklet (I like this one because it's slim and lightweight - $18.50) ISBN: 978-1640020917 - (link)

    Recommended/Optional:

Glannon Guide to Civil Procedure: Learning Civil Procedure Through Multiple-Choice Questions and Analysis, Fourth Edition (2018 - $53.00) ISBN: 978-1543804843, (link)

Note to Students: Older versions of both of Glannon's study guides are now out of date and should be avoided! There is a copy of the Glannon Book on reserve at the Law Library. Used copies of the new edition are widely available.

5009-1 Criminal Law [Diamond]
  • Dressler & Garvey, Criminal Law, Cases and Materials, 2019, 8th, 9781642427820, West Academic
  • The 8th Edition can be purchased locally through the campus bookstore at Barnes & Noble or at  Claitor’s Bookstore; or through booksellers available online and otherwise. At this point, the book has been used in courses around the country during all or part of three academic years, such that students who are interested in lowering their expenses by buying used book have ample numbers available.

Some students choose to lower their costs even further by purchasing an older edition. So it is that the 6th and 7th Editions of Dressler & Garvey are available and are cheaper than the current edition, but for any student who chooses that alternative, there is the additional responsibility to seek out the pages that correspond to the 8th Edition assignment.

Students should be aware of what West Academic Publishing calls its “casebook plus” option. Through this option, students purchase a digital copy of the 8th Edition in addition to or instead of the print edition, along with digital learning aids. (See  https://www.westacademic.com/casebookplus).

Students can also buy the digital learning aids separate and apart from the digital copy, something those who choose a used book might wish to do.  (See https://system.na1.netsuite.com/core/media/media.nl?id=610229&c=3668083&h=703f49a196c995617292&_xt=.pdf.)  You will find these tools highly useful.

THE DIGITAL STUDY AIDS ARE VERY STRONGLY RECOMMENDED. What this means is that if you choose to buy a hard copy of a used 8th Edition or of an earlier edition, you would have to purchase the digital aids separately.

    Pricing options are here: https://www.westacademic.com/Dressler-and-Garveys-Cases-and-Materials-on-Criminal-Law-8th-9781642427820.

The publisher has announced the following: “Students can purchase any of our books from our online store, http://store.westacademic.com/ . We do have eBook versions, at a substantial discount, for many of our books. Free shipping is available, and students can get a 15% discount on print books (and after June 1, also on eBooks) if they use this code upon checkout: LSULAW.”

"For print books, West Academic Publishing offers free shipping and immediate, temporary access to the e-book version to last until the print copy arrives."

    • Note: It is not necessary that you purchase the 2021 edition of the Civil Code. An older version of the Civil Code will suffice as most of the law of sales and lease has not been revised recently. However, we will frequently refer to the Official Legislative Commentary to the Civil Code articles that we will study in this course. Not all versions of the Louisiana Civil Code contain Official Legislative Commentary. If your Civil Code does not contain Official Legislative Commentary, you will be expected to either access the Civil Code on Westlaw or Lexis or purchase a Civil Code that contains the required materials.  A recommended version of the Civil Code with commentary is Lonegrass, Louisiana Civil Code with Official Legislative Commentary: 2020 Student Edition, 2020, Student Edition, 9781684679010, West Academic Publishing, (link), Price: $42.00 (Available e-book format).

5021-1 & 5 Legal Research & Writing I [Barry]
  • Connected Quizzing for Legal Writing, Wolters Kluwer
  • Connected Quizzing for Legal Writing is NOT the same as Connected Casebook access. You need BOTH for this course. You have three options for purchasing Connected Quizzing—two options involve bundling Connected Quizzing with the purchase of the Connected Casebook version of the Legal Writing textbook; the third option involves purchasing Connected Quizzing separately.

Option 1: Bundle Connected Quizzing with a new print textbook with Connected Casebook access using ISBN 9781543814330. Wolters Kluwer is supposed to offer this bundle at www.wklegaledu.com for $145. Other retailers, including the LSU Bookstore and Amazon, may also offer this bundle; however, you must check with those retailers for their bundle price. Under this option, your book will come bundled with an access code shrink-wrapped to the back cover of your textbook (do not throw this code away) or as a scratch-off sticker inside the front cover. Redeem this access code at www.casebookconnect.com. If your book does NOT come with a Connected Quizzing access code, you did not purchase the appropriate bundled product, and you will be required to purchase Connected Quizzing separately (Option 3).

Option 2: Bundle Connected Quizzing with a digital-only Connected Casebook version of the book at a discounted price using ISBN 9781543830859. Wolters Kluwer is supposed to offer this bundle for $104 at a URL to be released at a later date.

Option 3: CQ-Only Direct Purchase. If you already purchased your textbook elsewhere, you can purchase Connected Quizzing separately for $29/course at www.wklegaledu.com/CQ. After completing your purchase, click “Access Now” on the order confirmation page or go directly to CasebookConnect.com. If you are an existing CasebookConnect.com user, log into your account and you will find Connected Quizzing on your dashboard. If you are not an existing CasebookConnect.com user, click “First Time User” to complete your account set-up. You will not receive, nor will you need, an access code if you purchase directly from www.wklegaledu.com/CQ.

  • Core Grammar for Lawyers
  • Online subscription purchase — will be explained in the syllabus.

  • The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation, 2020, 21st, 9780578666150, Harvard Law Review Association

5021-2, 8, 13 Legal Research & Writing I [Tanner]
  • Core Grammar for Lawyers
  • Online subscription purchase—will be explained in syllabus.

  • The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation, 2020, 21st, 9780578666150, Harvard Law Review Association
  • I highly recommend purchasing the 21st edition.  If desired or necessary, you may purchase the 20th edition, but doing so may make completing assigned citation exercises more difficult as some rules changed between the two editions and the reading assignments will be mapped to the 21st edition.

  • Sinsheimer, Brostoff, & Burkoff, Legal Writing: A Contemporary Approach, 2018, 2nd, 9781640205321, West Academic
  • Unless you are buying a used version of this textbook, your purchase of a new textbook will likely come with the required Learning Library access. Just be sure to check on this when you make your purchase by reading what your purchase comes with.

Textbook Purchase Options that also INCLUDE this course's required Learning Library access:

    CasebookPlus Softbound: ISBN 9781683283478

The CasebookPlus softbound print book format also includes lifetime digital access to an eBook AND 12-month access to the (required) digital Learning Library.

eBook & Learning Library: ISBN 9781640205321

The eBook and Learning Library format includes lifetime digital access to the eBook AND 12-month access to the (required) digital Learning Library. It does NOT include a print book format.

Note: Presently, the only place where you can get an eBook & Learning Library option is through the West Academic website, www.westacademic.com.

  • Learning Library to Accompany "Legal Writing", 9781640205338, West Academic
  • If you bought a new textbook, whether in print CasebookPlus format or eBook format, your textbook purchase should include access to the Learning Library. If it does not, or if you purchased a used textbook (which likely won't have the Learning Library access), you can purchase just the Learning Library for $35.00 by going to West Academic's online store at this link: https://www.westacademic.com/Learning-Library-to-Accompany-Sinsheimer-Legal-Writing-A-Contemporary-Approach-2d-9781640205338.

Bookstores lack the ability to sell the Learning Library for the textbook separate from the textbook itself. Thus, presently, the only place where you can get the $35 Learning Library only option is through the West Academic website, www.westacademic.com.  From there, choose the option titled "Learning Library to Accompany Sinsheimer . . . Burkoff’s Legal Writing, A Contemporary Approach, 2d."

Note: See information under the textbook entry or go to www.westacademic.com to learn about bundling options for purchasing the text and Learning Library.

  • Connected Quizzing for Legal Writing, Wolters Kluwer
  • Connected Quizzing for Legal Writing is NOT the same as Connected Casebook access. You need BOTH for this course. You have two options for purchasing Connected Quizzing—one option involves bundling Connected Quizzing with the purchase of the Connected Casebook version of the Legal Writing textbook; the second option involves purchasing Connected Quizzing separately.

Option 1: Bundle Connected Quizzing with a new print Legal Writing textbook with Connected Casebook access using ISBN 9781543814330. Wolters Kluwer is supposed to offer this bundle at www.wklegaledu.com for $128. If your book does NOT come with a Connected Quizzing access code, you did not purchase the appropriate bundled product, and you will be required to purchase Connected Quizzing separately (Option 2).

Option 2: CQ-Only Direct Purchase. If you already purchased your textbook elsewhere, you can purchase Connected Quizzing separately for $49/course using ISBN: 9781543814491 at www.wklegaledu.com/CQ. After completing your purchase, click  follow the instructions that will appear to access Connected Quizzing on www.casebookconnect.com. • Neumann, Simon, & Painter-Thorne, Legal Writing, 219, 4th, 9781543812169, Wolters Kluwer
  • You must purchase a format of the Legal Writing textbook that has Connected Casebook access. Connected Casebook access refers to a textbook with lifetime access to the online e-book, plus access to interactive study questions and other learning tools available on CasebookConnect.com. Connected Casebook access DIFFERS from Connected Quizzing, which is also a required course material. As noted under the Connected Quizzing entry, you also have purchase options that allow you to bundle your Connected Casebook textbook purchase with the Connected Quizzing purchase. However, below are some of the textbook format options to choose from that include Connected Casebook access (but NOT Connected Quizzing access).

Option 1: Buy a new print Legal Writing textbook (ISBN 9781543805192) or loose-leaf textbook (ISBN 9781543812138) from the campus bookstore or any other retailer, including wklegaledu.com. The access code inside your print or loose-leaf book will give you access to the online e-book and learning tools. CAUTION: Buying a used book most likely means that the access code for the online resources has already been used and you will have to purchase access to the Connected Casebook online resources separately by purchasing a digital version of the book (Option 3).

Option 2: Rent a new print textbook (ISBN 9781543812145) for the entire course term. CAUTION: You will need this same book again for your spring legal writing course; thus, rentals may not be the most cost-effective option.   If the access code for the online resources has already been used, you will have to purchase access to the Connected Casebook online resources separately by purchasing a digital version of the book (Option 3).

Option 3: Purchase digital-only access to your Connected Casebook (ISBN 9781543812169) from WKLegaledu.com and access the online e-book and Connected Casebook learning tools immediately. CAUTION: Digital versions of the book (from retailers other than WKLegaledu.com) may NOT come with the needed access to the Connected Casebook online resources.
